Herbert VanOstrand Obituary

October 5, 1930 - October 1, 2025 Herbert Paul Van Ostrand, of Toluca Lake, California, was born in Portland, Oregon, and served in the U.S. Army from 1951 to 1953. He earned an Industrial Design degree from ArtCenter College of Design after a YMCA career retreat inspired his pursuit of college. He worked with Welton Becket & Associates, designing the Music Center for Performing Arts logo (still seen today on the building and website), and went on to pioneer Architectural Signage-melding graphics with building design-founding Vomar Products, Inc. in 1963 and building on his invention of the first building directory, patented in 1965. He loved watercolors, auctions, a good party, and sharing his wisdom. He is survived by his wife Elena, four children-Jason, Susan, Debbie, and Gary-seven grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren, remembered for integrity and his creative, innovative spirit. Services: October 10, 2025, 5:00–6:00 p.m., Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills, Faith Chapel.
