James Cotter Obituary

James Joseph Cotter, Jr., "Jim", 51, beloved husband of Gina Taylor Cotter and devoted father of Sophia, Brooke, and James III, passed away on March 10, 2021, after a brave and heroic battle with kidney cancer. He was born on July 16, 1969, in Los Angeles, California to Mary Ellen Cotter and the late James Joseph Cotter, Sr.

In 1987, Jim graduated from Harvard School in Los Angeles, and then attended Brown University where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Classics and Classical Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics. During this time, he studied Italian and cooking in Florence, Italy and developed a love for the city and country. After graduating from Brown, Jim attended New York University where he obtained his Juris Doctor degree and a Master of Laws (LLM) in Taxation. It was his time in New York that led Jim to his soulmate, Gina, at a chance encounter at the Costume Institute Benefit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in the Fall of 1997.

After a legal career in Manhattan specializing in corporate law and practicing at the international law firm Winston & Strawn, Jim dedicated his career to his family's business. He spent many years as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of both the Cotter Orchards and Cecelia Packing Corporation, a Cotter family-owned citrus grower, packer and marketer that controls approximately 2,000 acres of orange groves in the San Joaquin Valley.

Jim joined the Board of Directors of Reading International in 2002, working with his father who was CEO and controlling shareholder. In 2007, he became Vice Chairman and was later appointed President and then CEO. Over the many years at Reading, Jim played an important role in establishing the company as one of the world's leading theatrical exhibition companies and a major real estate company.

Jim was his children's first and best teacher and instilled in them a love of learning. He truly enjoyed the time he spent with his three children home this past year, in particular teaching James III. He was passionate about travel, especially to Italy, and enjoyed both cooking with his children and fine dining. He loved playing backgammon, backyard volleyball with Sophia and Brooke, and most any competitive sport with friends and family. He was a great teammate and a fair player. Jim was a loving family man with a bright and unwavering smile who vibrated with positive energy, even during the most challenging struggles.

Jim is survived by his wife Gina and his three children Sophia, Brooke and James III, his mother Mary Ellen Cotter, and sisters Ellen Marie Cotter and Ann Margaret Cotter.

Due to the current COVID-19 pandemic and regulations, a Celebration of Life in Jim's honor will be held at a later time. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to MD Anderson Cancer Center at http://mdacc.convio.net/goto/JamesJCotterJr

I can´t believe it´s been a year that we have lost Jim. I remember such great times we had with Jim in New York, the great talks about where our lives we going and his concern and counsel on my personal life. He always took such great interest in other people. He was kind and thoughtful. The world is a little darker without his presence but he lives on through his children.

I heard of Jim Jr's passing just today. I worked for and with Jim Jr. while I was with Cecelia Packing. I was hired by his father, the late Jim Cotter Sr. I worked for Jim Sr. for eight years and the last three of those were with Jim Jr. I considered Jim Jr. a friend and a true intellectual, yet a very down to earth guy. We kept in touch over the years and I can honestly say that I will miss our occasional conversations. He was a good man and a good leader. Prayers for his wife, children, and family.

I met Jim through Gina in the late 90s. He was an incredibly smart, loving and caring man. It was a privilege to know him and spend time with him. He and Gina built an amazing family and it was a joy to see what a wonderful father he was. I was devastated to hear of his loss. May he rest in peace.

Dear Gina, Sophia, Brooke, and James. I was fortunate to grow up with your Husband and Dad. We attended St. Paul the Apostle school together. We were in the same class, played sports together, and did school projects with one another. We had sleepovers at each others homes, dressed up in costumes for Halloween, and Jimmy's Dad would take us downtown to the Los Angeles Athletic Club so we could shoot hoops. We had a wonderful time hanging out together, laughing, and playing. I cherish these memories. Your Husband, Dad, and my friend was a Good Man. Kind, Caring, Loyal, and Considerate. I am sorry for your loss. You and the Cotter Family are in my thoughts and prayers for Strength, Courage, and Healing. God Bless You and God Bless your Husband and Dad. Faith. Hope. Love.

I was devastated to learn of Jim Jr’s recent passing, to be honest I am still processing it. Jim and his late father Jim Sr employed me at Reading, I worked for the company for 6 years and two of those under Jim Jr’s leadership - we had a fantastic working relationship, he was always very respectful of me and for that, I was always grateful. I had the pleasure of having Jim Jr at my home for dinner in Melbourne, Australia - like Jim Jr I have three children, they and my wife Elisha, all enjoyed Jim’s company that night. They too are shocked that Jim is no longer with us. I continued to message Jim following my Reading experience. He was a fine man and by all reports a champion father and husband. Rest peacefully Jim.

Gina, I am stunned by this horrible news. It was only weeks ago I spoke with Jim. He gave no inkling that he was dealing with this battle on top of all the others he had to overcome over the past years. Jim was courageous, empathetic, humble, honorable, and, of course, a consummate 'foodie'. I really enjoyed meeting Jim for meals when visiting LA.
Jim's passion was you and Sophia, Brooke and James III. My thoughts and prayers are with you in your time of grief. I hope there will be a time in the not to distant future when we all can be together to celebrate Jim's life and can give you all strong hugs. In the meantime, if there is anything I can do to help, don't hesitate to ask.
