Jerome Jay "Jerry" LEWIS

Jerome LEWIS Obituary

LEWIS, Jerome "Jerry" Jay Jerry lost his battle with cancer and passed peacefully in his sleep on February 27, 2011. He led a full life, enjoying his 80 years with vigor, humor, and optimism. After serving in the Army during the Korean War, he began a near 40-year career in the new & used metalworking machinery business. He met Cissy, the love of his life, and married in 1955. He founded Lewis Machinery Sales in 1958. Based in Burbank, he networked with fellow machinery dealers and industrial auctioneers throughout the world and truly enjoyed the business. Aboard his 50' Hatteras Sportfisher, "Sassy Cissy," he made countless trips with family and friends to Catalina Island as well as journeys up and down the coast from Cabo San Lucas to Canada. He was a proud member of the Long Beach Yacht Club, Catalina Island Yacht Club, Los Angeles Billfish Club, and the Southern California Tuna Club. He retired in 1995 to concentrate on boating, fishing, travel and classic cars. He collected hot rods and custom cars, primarily from the 1930s and 1940s, earning a number of trophies. Jerry is survived by Dolores "Cissy" Lewis, daughters Pamela (Dennis) Glavis, Leslie White, son Chris (Arlene) Lewis, seven grandchildren, sister Dorothy Meyers, as well as an extended family and host of dear friends with whom he treasured countless good times. A "Bon Voyage" for Jerry will be held Sunday, March 20, Noon to 4PM at the Long Beach Yacht Club,www.lbyc.org

Papa was one of my biggest inspirations. He was a hardworker, an honest man, and never took anything for granted. He was an amazing grandfather to us grandchildren and always had our best interests at heart even if we didn't feel the same way. Any accomplishments I create for myself I know that he was a major factor in how I came to conquer my goals. I love you PAPA.

FOREVER AND ALWAYS.

To Cissy and the entire Lewis family.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you in this difficult time.

However, please know that Jerry was an inspiration to me and many others in the used machinery business. He was tough as nails, yet always with a smile. His humor and zest for life was contagious.

He was truly one of the "great ones".

Bon Voyage Jerry.

On our way to Catalina one afternoon, about 5 miles out of the breakwater, something caught fire in the engine room. As the rest of us stood there stunned, Jerry sprang into action. Without missing a beat, he took the water hose in the cockpit and wet down a hand towel. Placing the wet towel over his nose and mouth with one hand, he took the hose with the other hand and marched down into into the engine room through the smoke to save the boat. Moments later, he emerged victorious. His bravery was and will remain an inspiration.

To The Lewis Family,
All of us in the Rogo family send our sincere sympathy for this loss. Jerry and Mort and others represented a great era in the used machnery business. We all will live life a little differently without Jerry's outlook alongside of us, but relish our lives a little more because we once were friends with Jerry Lewis.

Jerry was an inspiration to me as he was to many others. I met Jerry in 1966 through business but, soon became very good friends with him and Cissy and even though we lived far apart we kept in touch. Like many others, I will miss Jerry very much.

For Cissy and the rest of the family left behind, please know that Valerie and I have you in our thoughts and prayers.

God Bless, Tony and Valerie Grouse (Fort Myers, FL)
