Jim Flanigan Obituary

June 6, 1936 - August 19, 2021 This is an excerpt of the obituary that ran in the LA Times on Aug. 22, 2021 as a feature story.
It was crafted by Michael Hiltzik, colleague and friend of Jim Flanigan.

James Flanigan, whose twice-weekly column was a mainstay of business coverage at The Times for some two decades, died Aug. 19 after a brief illness. He was 85.

James Joseph Flanigan was born in the Bronx, New York, on June 6, 1936. He graduated from New York's Cardinal Hayes High School and in 1961 from Manhattan College, which he completed after a two-year stint in the Army. In 1963 he secured his job as a business reporter at the Herald Tribune, where he had worked during college as a night copy boy and after graduating as an editorial assistant and a New York-based reporter for the Tribune's Paris edition. While in working in Paris he married his first wife, Anne Fitzmaurice. She died in 1992.

Flanigan's work brought him numerous awards, capped in 2014 by the Lifetime Achievement Award of the Gerald R. Loeb Awards, which are considered the highest accolades in American business journalism.

Flanigan is survived by his daughter, Siobhan, of Portland, Ore., son Michael, of Chino, Calif., and his wife, the former Patricia Quatrine, whom he married in 1997. He is also survived by nine grandchildren and three stepdaughters, Gina Quatrine of Redondo Beach; Pamela Haase of Plymouth, Mich.; and Christine Conway of Malibu.

I grew up in the Bronx with Jim, who was known at the time as Zeke. I was a few years younger, but always admired Zeke for his keen sense of humor, and his determination to continue his education at Manhattan college.

Our deepest sympathies go to Michael, Siobhan , Patricia and all the extended Flanigan family on the passing of Jim. At the young age of 18 he brought me to see Washington DC . We subsequently met in New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles where he showed both myself, my husband and children the delights of the US. He was so generous, kind and witty. Always had a story to tell and loved good company. We enjoyed all the family gatherings in Ireland where we would gather the clan, make copious cups of tea, sing, dance, eat, drink and be merry. We miss him dearly as we do his first wife , our beautiful Auntie Anne. May he rest in peace, .

Siobhan, Michael, Patricia and family. I am so very sad to hear about uncle Jim's passing. We all loved him so much. Such an intelligent, learned, charismatic, kind, witty and gentle man. 'Ni bheidh a leithead anseo aris' as they say in Ireland - 'we won't see the like of him again'. A very special person. He will be greatly missed xx
