Joann Marie Zdunich (Gulka Morken)
June 5, 1962 – December 30, 2014
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Joann Marie Zdunich of Saskatoon on Tuesday, December 30, 2014. Joann slipped away after her brief but courageous battle with cancer. Joann will be sweetly remembered and sadly missed by her children Austin Morken (Jacklyn Sveinbjornson), Adam Morken, Emily Zdunich and her husband Gary Zdunich. Also left to mourn her passing are mother Stella Gulka, brother Ernie Gulka (Yvonne) and their son Ryan (Tracy), sister Sally Amy (Elgin) and their children Vanessa (Cody), Tyffany, Tyrrell, and Keenean. Joann was predeceased by her father Mike M. Gulka. Joann was born in Preeceville, Saskatchewan. The rural environment in which Joann grew up served her well in many aspects of her life. She was strong spirited and hardworking which are qualities that would have been instilled by her parents and grandparents. Joann worked for over 24 years with the Federal Government, the majority with the department of Agriculture, Research Branch. She was a trusted and loyal employee and a good friend to many of her colleagues. In both her work life and private life, Joann was always someone to be counted on for support. She enjoyed her family very much and especially helping her children realize their goals and aspirations and seeing them grow into fine adults. Her artistic abilities were always on display every spring when her beautiful plant and flower arrangements graced the yard and patio. Many fond memories were formed at Candle Lake where the family spent their summer vacations basking in the sun on the beach, Joann's favourite down time activity. She was an inventive and accomplished cook with a steaming pot of soup on the burner every Saturday morning. Many lifelong friendships started during the hours spent at the hockey rinks watching all three kids play. Joann's children and husband wish to extend a heartfelt thank you to all our special friends and family members who rushed to our aid and provided the much appreciated support during our difficult journey. Also a special thank you goes to our Home Care nurses as well as those that provided compassion and support at the Palliative Care ward, St. Paul's Hospital.
