Larry Barr Obituary

April 19, 1926 - January 12, 2018 Larry L. Barr, Ph.D. passed away peacefully in Laguna Woods, CA on January 12 holding Diane Barr's hand, his wife of 68 years, and surrounded by family members. Larry is survived by Diane, his three sons Phil, Steven and his wife Mary Frey, and Dennis and his wife, Firkins Reed; his grandchildren Ariel Rideout and her husband Colin Cross, David Barr, and Zoe and Mia Barr; his great grand-daughters Karen and Lisa Cross; his sister Bea Breslaw; and cousins, nieces and nephews. Born in NYC, Larry was a clinical psychologist, educator and the founder/director of Hidden Trails Camp in Agoura Hills, CA. He touched the lives of thousands of young people; he was big-hearted, fun-loving, wise, adventuresome, generous and, above all, kind. He was gifted in supporting young people through difficult phases of their lives. He wrote, "I tried to make a real positive difference in the lives of my family, friends, patients and students." He loved hiking, swimming, puzzles, games, and racquetball. May his bright light and love live on in the hearts of all of those who had the good fortune to know and love him. No funeral/memorial are yet planned. Family can be reached at [email protected]. Contributions to the charity of your choice in his name are welcome.

Larry was a Big Inspiration for me to become a Therapist over the last 47 years, having mentored me in High School as my Counselor and my first employer at Hidden Trails.

i remember Dr Barr as I was hired in 1960 to be in charge of the horse program at Hidden Trails, and under on-site Manager, Pete and his mother in cook kitchen. I managed the horses and took people out on long and short trail rides. Back in those days I was also attending Pierce College in Woodland Hills around my work schedule. One time when El Camino College, Los Angeles came out to Hidden Trails, one of the Homecoming Queens fell in love with me because she liked horses too, and we dated on trail rides when free at Hidden Trails, and got married on 10 August 1962. We've been married over 60 years, and I'm a doctor of Animal and Veterinary Science. I was a professor for 10 years at Cal Poly State University, San Luis Obispo, and Outstanding Professor; and then moved to Utah when I was offered a position at Utah State University, Logan, UT in remote high mountain Cache Valley and rural agriculture. I was a Carnegie Professor at USU for over 40 years in the Animal and Veterinary Science Department and I retired at 77 years old in 2019 in order to be with my super wife, Nancy McNeal. We've had 8 kids, 4 boys, and 4 girls, and 16 grandkids. While at San Luis Obispo, CA I also founded a now famouse non-profit, "The Navajo Sheep Project" in order to rescue from extinction, search and find remnants on the Navajo Reservation and breed them so I could start bringing them back to also preserve the historic sheep, their unique wool for weaving the famous Navajo Tapestries too. Our website is www.navajosheepproject.org and we survive on tax deductible donations too as we are a 501 c 3 legally.
Dr. Barr and his family were great and I've never forgotten my experiences there at Hidden Trails and with all our guests, and fun being in charge of the horse program. My email is on the Navajo Sheep Project website too. I would love to hear from Diane and the family too. I'm an octogenarian living rural, a Professor Emeritus still working with animals, and being tested for cancer this week. Oh well. My sincere love and respect to Dr Barr and the entire Barr Family.

I know Larry passed a few years ago but I just saw this obit after a search for him.
He was a great man.
Kind, caring, generous of spirit.
I met him as a teenager who lived with a very difficult father.
Larry took an interest in me, listened, talked to me and made a difference in my self worth.
I never think of him without smiling.
God bless Larry wherever he is now and thanks Larry.
Your friend,
Paul Mirkovich

Just wanted to send my condolences and say that even though it's been around 55 years since I've seen Dr. Barr, I still remember him and his wife when I went to HT when I was five/six.

Diane, Dennis, Phil and Steve (and the rest of the family, grandchildren I never met, etc.): I am so SO sorry for your loss. I learned so much from Larry, have so many wonderful memories, and am so sorry I did not have a chance to see him more recently as I'd hoped. My heart goes out to you. Cousin Phil Berns
