Mauro Caputo Obituary

March 25, 1935 - December 25, 2016 Mauro was born in Mount Vernon, New York and graduated from Parson's School of Design in New York and earned a BS in Art Education from NYU. Early in his career, he was Creative Director of Revlon's Packaging Division and then moved west to California in the late 1960's to create award winning cosmetics, "Oil of the Turtle" for Polly Bergan and later, fragrances and packaging for Camp Beverly Hills. Mauro was an entrepreneur creating his own greeting card company and men's fragrance/skincare line, "GIANO". As a top packaging designer he created products and packaging for Pricilla Presley, Fred Hayman, Henry Mancini, Madonna, Princess Yasmin Aga Khan, Merle Norman Cosmetics, Houbigant, Shaklee, Stetson, Coty Perfumes, and Max Factor. He retired and became a teacher and visual artist, designing art screens, tapestries and contemporary paintings on canvas. He found inspiration in the modern masters like Courbet, Matisse and Manet, using Roy Lichtenstein's witty ben-day dot technique. His visual works were hung in a number of shows in Los Angeles and New York and had his first one man show this past December at Art Core Gallery located in downtown L.A. Mauro was known as a wonderful friend. He was a renaissance man and was extremely thoughtful, generous, caring, and an eternal optimist; "living life to the fullest one day at a time". Mauro is survived by his loving family; wife, art dealer, Molly Barnes Caputo; his son, Mark Caputo and wife Susan and grandchildren, Matthew and Caitlyn; his daughter, Gabriella Ramundo and grandchildren, Sophie and Clifford; his son Gian Caputo and wife Heather and grandchild Enzo, He is also survived by his wife's family: her son, Paul Barnes and grandchildren Paulina and Justin and her daughter, Christie Barnes. A Herb Alpert sculpture generously donated in Mauro's remembrance will be displayed at West L.A. College in Culver City where he taught art and design for many years. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to: West Los Angeles College Art Department, Office of the President in memory Mauro Caputo, West Los Angeles College, Attn: Dr. James Limbaugh, 9000 Overland Avenue, Culver City, CA, 90230 or UC Regents, Dr. Rettig's Research in memory of Mauro Caputo, UCLA Health Sciences Development, Attn: Alex Ashworth, 10945 Le Conte Ave, Suite 3132, Los Angeles, CA 90095

In my collecting of ephemera, I recently came across a beautiful and simply designed Christmas card that Mr. Caputo created and published. Glad I found this obituary so I could learn more about this talented individual. I will make a modest contribution to the art department at West LA College in his memory.

Mauro Caputo was my aunt's first husband and the father of their three children, Marc, Gabriella, and Gian. He was a true artistic talent and wonderful man. While I know little of his life of the last 30 years, other than a video interview of him regarding his artwork, I have no doubt that his latter years were more grace-filled than when I knew him. May he rest eternally in peace and may light perpetual shine upon him through the mercy of Jesus Christ.
