Peter Smith Obituary

Pete Smith was born April 19, 1933, in the City of Orange. He grew up in Laguna and Newport Beach. Pete always knew he wanted to be an announcer and worked for several L.A. radio stations and even the CBS network. In 1962 he began working for the Gene Autry owned 710/KMPC. During his more than forty years in L-A radio, it was KMPC where he spent his longest journey on the air, working alongside radio legends like Dick Whittinghill, Gary Owens, Wink Martindale, etc. and meeting his wife, of 44 years, Nancy. Pete also used his mellifluous tones for 21 years at Armed Forces Radio Services where he was heard around the world. In 1979 Pete became a radio station owner himself joining a group of investors to buy K-Wave in San Clemente, which he ran until 1985. He then lent his voice and encyclopedic knowledge of jazz to the "Music of Your Life" radio network. In addition to radio, he loved sports, especially the Dodgers. While working at a radio station within walking distance of Chavez Ravine, he would watch the stadium being built with his brown bag lunch and could hardly wait for opening day April 10, 1962. Pete also voiced many commercials for radio and TV, documentaries, a few movie trailers and provided in -flight entertainment for several American and international airlines. Pete's other interests included refurbishing classic cars and thoroughbred horse racing. He and Nancy even owned several horses that won races at Santa Anita, Del Mar and Hollywood Park. After retirement they split their time between their homes in the Palm Springs area and Rosarito Beach, Mexico. He died at age 90 peacefully at home in the desert and the family will have a Celebration of Life at their home in Rosarito Beach. He is also survived by sons Dan and Randy, stepson Rob and many grandchildren.

Pete Smith was my radio companion back in 1969 in the wee small hours of the morning. I spent time with him, trying to stay awake, on KMPC Radio when I fed my newborn. Loved all the disc jockeys on KMPC then & into the 70's. RIP Pete, & thank you for your company!

Pete, a legend, a dear friend, my mentor...Thank you for being one of the icons and champions, I began in music and ended in music...
Because of Pete I was able to buy my home...music man, we would spin records, his collection of LP´s rivaled my late brother´s...Ray´s collection was better than any Radio Station´s, as was Pete´s! We listened in Baja, his wonderful wife Nancy...the love of his life. He, for some peculiar reason liked me. I would call out an artist, we´d listen together and for hours we´d enjoy each other´s knowledge. Now Pete knows how much I held him dear to my heart ~ we are still 6 degrees of separation. We knew the same people in radio, announcers, Armed Forces Radio...my heartfelt condolences to all his family, especially Nancy...and all his friends. I am one. He is free now and out of pain. Spinning records in Heaven for the Big Guy!
Rest well, rest easy and rest in perfect peace .
My love, Kathy xo

My father Peter C. Smith was a Hollywood radio announcer, a thoroughbred horse breeder and a home developer in Baja California. He passed away after fighting numerous forms of cancer the last few years. He was 90.
My dad was a performing artist and as such could be temperamental in his personal life. He was widowed with three young sons in 1961 but stuck with us and did the best he could. His best lesson was we never heard him talk poorly of any ethnicity or gender -- just specific people! RIP Dad, you will be missed.
