Raymon Kaplan Obituary

April 20, 1935 - March 22, 2018 Dr. Raymon Kaplan, MD, passed away peacefully from complications of Alzheimer's disease in his home in the evening of Thursday, March 22, 2018 at the age of 82. Born in New York City, New York, Raymon and his family soon moved to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. When Raymon was 13, his family moved again to Los Angeles where he spent the remainder of his life. Raymon graduated from John Marshall High School in Los Angeles, then from UCLA as an undergraduate, and then from one of the first UCLA Medical School classes where he earned his MD. While in his rotating internship at Wadsworth Veterans Administration Hospital (now VA West Los Angeles Medical Center), Raymon was drafted into the Army as a physician, where he found psychiatry as his calling. Returning from the Army, Raymon entered into a three-year residency at the UCLA Neuropsychiatric Institute, where he met and fell in love with his wife, Eunice. Raymon's career as a psychiatrist spanned 45 years, mostly out of his office in Marina Del Rey. He was proud to be a clinical professor of psychiatry at the USC Medical School for many of those years. His dedication to bringing comfort and mental health to his patients was evidenced by his many years of service, and the outpouring of thanks and devotion from his patients when his practiced closed in 2012. Raymon was very proud of his Jewish heritage. He was a member of the congregations at Kenesseth Israel in Hollywood while his father was the Rabbi, then at the UCLA Hillel. He was proud to be able to instill the same Jewish values unto his children. Raymon enjoyed sharing the comforts of beautiful scenery and classical music. He preferred to exercise by jogging or bicycling by the beach, in the deserts of Palm Springs or in the lovely wooded landscape of Victoria, British Columbia. He was a regular supporter of the Los Angeles Philharmonic and KUSC. Raymon's primary source of happiness was his family. He was devoted to his wife of 50 years Eunice, daughter Deborah, son Steven, grandaughter Illaria, and grandsons Eneas, Ethan, and Zachary. The family requests that donations in Raymon's name be made to the Alzheimer's Foundation of America (www.alzfdn.org) or KUSC (http://donate.kusc.org/).

My sister just told me that there was a notice in the In Memoriam column in the Marshall newsletter that Raymon Kaplan class of summer 1952 died. We were both part of the debate and speech program there, as well as friends throughout our high school years.

Ray and I took our first speech class together from Mr. Hanks at John Marshall High School. At the first meeting of the class, everyone had to give a short bio, then at the end we were to be tested on how many students remembered your name.People would try to say something different" to stand out. I have no idea what I said. Ray barely mentioned his first name, and concentrated on his middle name Tzvi, repeating It maybe a dozen times. Most of the students - including me - had never met anyone with that name. This all flashed back in my memory when I saw that the obituary was for Raymon T Kaplan. I have always thought his first name was Raymond. He could have stressedin his talk that it was Raymon (without the d), but he chose to emphasize his Jewish middle name.

Dear Mrs Kaplan and beloved family of Dr Kaplan. I know he is at peace. My heart is broken knowing he is no longer here to soak in that easy smile of comfort and humor. I will remain forever grateful to Dr Kaplan for years of support, even when I was not his patient. I used to send annual cards and was stunned when the last one was returned. I'll always remember his and your joyful faces when I ran into on the Santa Monica Pier in 2000 when my former partner and I produced an event during the DNC Convention. The Kaplan family is special to me, even though we've never met. I even recall stories about Nosh. Peace and blessings.
