Richard Huemer Obituary

June 16, 1933 - May 1, 2018 Dr. Huemer was born in Los Angeles where he spent most of his life; he passed away in Palmdale after a brief illness. He was preceded in death by brother David Alexander Huemer, father Richard Martin Huemer and mother Mariette "Polly" Huemer. He is survived by his brother Allen, ex-wife Gloria, wife Mary Kay, his children Peter, Ariana, Michael, David, and his grandson Erik. Richard received his M.D. from UCLA after attending Pomona College. He then served as captain in the Army Medical Corps at Killeen Base before returning to California to conduct postdoctoral work in Cancer Immunology at CalTech. He subsequently headed research projects in Aging and Cancer Immunology at the Sepulveda VA and conducted a series on Alternative Cancer Treatments on Pacifica Radio. He received clinical nutritional training from Dr. Joseph Walters and starting practicing nutritional and orthomolecular medicine in 1975. He maintained practices in Westlake Village and Thousand Oaks before moving to Vancouver, WA, in 1990, marrying Mary Kay and returning California to practice in the Antelope Valley 8 years later. He served on the International Board of Advanced Longevity Medicine, as Associate Editor of Clinical Practice of Alternative Medicine, and president of the Orthomolecular Society. He lectured extensively on alternative medicine and wrote for many journals and magazines, including as a longtime columnist for Let's Live magazine. His published books include: "The Roots of Molecular Medicine," "The Healthy Heart Chart," and "Guide to Beating the Supergerms." Lighthearted works included "The Adventures of Buck O'Rue and his hoss, Reddish," and "The Planet Goochin," which he wrote for his children. In retirement, Richard continued his avocation of world travel with his wife Kay, working as a member of the Los Angeles County Task Force on Nutrition, writing articles, and attending meetings. At the time of his passing, he had been working on "The Square World," an animated film originally scripted and proposed to Disney by his father. Always an artist, some of Richard's work is reflected in the design and detail of the Huemer family website, huemer.com. As a brilliant, accomplished man and caring father, he leaves behind a great legacy, and the world is poorer for his passing. He will be missed by many.

Peter, I was so sorry to hear your news the other day. Your dad was so accomplished and has left an amazing legacy for your family and the many communities he enriched. I hope that the attached photo will make you smile with me as I remember the one time I met your dad ... at Universal Studios for a fun day. Thinking of you and your family. Heather
