Richard Sherman Obituary

Sherman, Richard G.
October 25, 1931 - April 14, 2011
Richard Sherman died peacefully at home, surrounded by his family, on April 14, 2011. He was born in Chicago on October 25, 1931, to David and Nina Sherman. He had two younger siblings, Fred and Adrian, whom he joins now at rest.

Richard moved to Los Angeles with his parents at age 13, graduating from Fairfax High in 1949. He volunteered to serve his country during the Korean War, and was stationed in Fairbanks, Alaska from 1951 to 1954. During this time, Richard held the title of Armed Forces Heavyweight Champion for two years.

He received undergraduate and accounting degrees from U.C.L.A., studied law at U.S.C., and was admitted to the California State Bar in 1961. Richard served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney for three years, then went into private practice, opening a partnership with lifelong friend Herb Sturman.

For the majority of his career, Richard practiced in Los Angeles, where he was a highly regarded criminal defense attorney and a fierce defender of justice. A highlight of his personal and professional life, was the five years he spent practicing law in Jackson, Wyoming with his dear friend and mentor, Gerry Spence. After returning to Los Angeles, Richard became a reserve officer with the Culver City Police Department.

He was blessed to share 50 years of marriage with his beloved wife, Andrea. Together, they have four children: Steven, Stacy (Billy), Michele (Yariv), and Melissa; all of whom grieve his passing. He is also survived by his nephew, Jeffrey Sherman, whom he loved as a son. Richard was a doting and loving grandfather to Mia, Sean, Kylie, and Benjamin. They were the joy of his later years.

Services will be held on Wednesday, April 20th at 11:00 a.m. - Pierce Brothers Westwood Village Mortuary - 1218 Glendon Ave, LA 90024.

It's been four years and you are still missed, my friend; you will never be forgotten. The end of your legacy marks the end of an era... he who perfected the use of the Jencks Motion, and lead the charge in many Circuit Court cases. May you rest in peace, knowing your friends look forward to reuniting with you.

I am so grateful to you for helping me achieve my dream of going to USC. I will never forget the time you drove all the way to Whittier to defend my father because you knew how frightened he was. I'm so sorry I didn't get the opportunity to say goodbye and to tell you how much you meant to me and my family. You will be in our hearts forever.
