One more memory: I had a patient with a dense white cataract. These can be tricky to operate on, but we can handle them. However, once I was doing one and the pieces of the cataract were unusually mobile, and probably "lightweight". They kept being repelled by the tip of my rapidly oscillating (vibrating) Phaco instrument. The little white pieces would dance away from my instrument and bounce around inside the front of the eye, instead of being attracted to it, and vacuumed up. This is the opposite of every other case.
I called Dr Sinskey, who I do not think knew who I was, and asked for advice. He opined that it probably was "lens chatter" from the Phaco needle oscillating too much. He recommended turning down the power (and I would probably also increase the vacuum suction power on the needle too).
This occurrence has not happened again, at least to this extreme. But don't worry Bob. When it happens, I'll be ready!

I remember going to a wonderful wine tasting event at the Chez Melange restaurant in Redondo Beach. It was sponsored by The Sinskey winery and one of Bob's sons was there. He spoke lovingly and humorously of Bob and certainly seemed to enjoy his job and partaking in Bob's winery investment/hobby. It is another nice memory.

Bob hardly knew who I was. He gave me friendly advice once on the phone and vaguely knew that I was a friend of one of his partners. Still, he was a part of medical history, so I endeavored to crash his retirement party at his home in Santa Monica. This is not something that an introvert like me would normally do, but I had to. I suppose it was my version of civil disobedience.
It was about 6:30 in the evening and the sun was out. Lots of cars on the street but no people. Everyone was inside and on the back patio. I approached his house from the sidewalk on the right, slowly and with trepidation, expecting to be met with a cool reception from someone inside. Who should come out the front door alone and looking a bit distracted, walk out to the mailbox, but Bob Sinskey. I confessed that I was uninvited but wanted to celebrate, and with a wry smile he led me inside to the party. I knew a number of colleagues there and met Loraine, friends and neighbors, and stayed pretty late. There was a book signing of his autobiography, and I have my autographed copy to this day. What a wonderful memory. Thank you Bob, and Sinskey family.

A Giant in Ophthalmology has passed who was a respected Surgeon andTeacher, who also built a wonderful winery that bears his name in Northern California, as well as developed devices and instruments for Cataract surgery that also bear his name. He will be sorely missed by patients, colleagues, friends and family. Rest in Peace.

I thought about your advice and encouragement to me just yesterday while doing something difficult.
You are always wherever we are Bob.
