Robert Thruston Obituary

October 4, 1934 - July 9, 2018 Robert George Thruston, former Superintendent of the Southern Pacific Railroad, Los Angeles Division, passed away peacefully at his home in Palm Desert, California, surrounded by his family. He was 83. Bob was born in Oakland, California, to George and Frances Thruston. He graduated in 1952 from Castlemont High School, and attended San Francisco State and San Jose State Universities. He served in the United States Army from 1957-1959. In 1966 he attended Harvard University Graduate School of Business Administration. Bob returned to college in 1973 obtaining a degree in aviation while earning his commercial pilot certificate. Bob's career with the Southern Pacific Railroad spanned over 40 years. He began as a brakeman in 1955, and from 1971-1979 served as the LA Division Superintendent. At the time of his retirement in 1996 he was SP's Vice President of Mexico, and President of Southern Pacific International. His high level of expertise was sought after by automotive and petroleum based companies in North America, Europe, and Asia. Known by everyone as the consummate gentleman, Bob was deeply loved and adored. Bob is survived by his loving wife of 36 years, Antonia; his daughters Christine Sykes (Robert) and Corinne Russell (Mark); and stepdaughter Simone Echeguren (Alex). "Bob-Bob," as he is affectionately known, also leaves his grandchildren Andrew Echeguren, Chad Sykes (Karis), Kevin Sykes, and Chelse Russell. I have known Robert's daughter Corinne for over 20 years, and we always shared stories together about our beloved fathers, how much we loved, appreciated and admired them as our Dads and as men of great character and accomplishment. While I never had the good fortune to meet Bob, I know that his best qualities have been inherited by his daughters and his legacy will continue. I know how much he loved Cori, and I am so thankful to him for having her in my life. My deepest sympathies and prayers for peace and joy in his memory in all the days to come.

My thoughts and prayers surround the family during this time of loss. Bob was the Superintendent in Los Angeles when I worked as a train dispatcher. He was instrumental in my promotion to Asst. Trainmaster and supported me through additional promotions on the LA Division. Bob was always a gentleman and cared for people. Rest in peace Bob!

As an outside lawyer for SP in Houston, I worked with Bob for many years. He taught me a lot about the railroad, its chemical freight traffic, and about doing business in Mexico. He served as an excellent witness for the Company in several suits and regulatory matters and he was always a good representative for SP as his knowledge and candor were always evident for everyone to see. I will always remember his story about a derailment site when he was a trainmaster where he had the job of entertaining Elizabeth Taylor and her husband, Richard Burton, at a cantina next to the involved track while everyone waited for the roadway to be cleared. Bob was just the right person to help calm down those two. Hugh McCulley

Bob Thruston was the first Superintendent I worked for when I first hired out as a brakeman with SP back in 1977...
Having come up through the ranks himself, he understood what railroading was all about...a true friend to the working man.
We were all sad to see him leave LA, he set the bar high...
RIP, Robert Thruston
