March 12, 1949 - July 12, 2018 Funeral services will be held at Mount Sinai Hollywood Hills on Sunday, July 15, at 12:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Hirshberg Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research or Congregation Shir Ami in West Hills.

This year in June was the 35th anniversary of my daughters bat mitzvah and in August will be her 18th wedding anniversary. Weve been reminiscing. Of course Rogers name came up. We remembered how sweet he was and how honored we were to have him officiate at both events. He will forever be tied to our family. Sweet memories.

We have been holding on to every hope of receiving another update from Roger for several months, and we are devastated to see this Times obituary, now that we have gathered the courage to look. Roger was my Caltech classmate, friend, and string-quartet partner, going back over 50 years. He worked in my late father's lab during his first sojourn at Caltech, and Dad was sorry that Roger did not complete some very promising work on photosynthesis. Roger and I were also section-mates in the Caltech Glee Club. Even at this young age, he was admired for his cantorial accomplishments. The kind of sincerity and loyalty that has sustained our friendship over so many years and over thousands of miles has been singular; not simply rare. I will miss him tremendously, yet all the more for the unique and irreproachable individual he was. Roger is vibrant in memory. Our most sincere condolences to Melody and his big, wonderful family.

I am very saddened by the news of Roger's passing and am wishing his wonderful wife Melody and their four boys : Joshua, Jeffrey, Kenneth, and Daniel strength during this time as they mourn such a loss. I had the opportunity to babysit for all four Goodman sons for five years to give their exhausted and loving parents a much-deserved break ! They were the most energetic, intelligent, and verbal children and I would observe how patient and hands-on Roger was as a father. But what I remember most about Roger himself was that he and I were two of the few people who had cell phones back then in the late 80's early 90's and we each had one of the first Fujitsu' models. I still have mine somewhere in my closet and will always think of Roger when I see it !

Roger was the cantor for my daughter Eliana's bat mitzvah in 1985. He was a softie. Eliana said she couldn't carry the Torah because it was too heavy. We told her she had to. Comes the Torah service and who held the Torah? Roger. We were honored to have him be the cantor for Eliana's wedding in 2002. What a lovely man. And as his license plate proclaimed ish tov. Roger was a patient of mine for 45 years and a friend for 50. I loved that new pictures of the boys came out at the beginning of each of our appointments with current updates. I don't think he would appreciate knowing about my tears each time I think of him.
