Nichols, Roger J. (73)
Born on August 31, 1930, and died on April 21, 2003. Roger Nichols was born in Oakland, California, graduated from University of Califronia, Berkeley. As member of the Naval ROTC at Berkeley, he joined the active duty side, and served for two years on the U.S.S. Skagit, an attack cargo ship, during the Korean conflict. When he left active duty he enrolled in Boalt Hall School of Law where he served on the Law Review. Upon graduation, he spent a year in Bordeaux, France on a Ford Foundation Scholarship studying French corporate law. He served as counsel for the Pacific Gas and Electric Company in San Francisco, for several years, and then moved to Los Angeles, where he was counsel for Pacific Lighting Corporation where among other things, he represented them at the El Paso Natural Gas rate hearings in Washington, D.C. He became a partner in the law firm of Kindel and Anderson heading their litigation section. As an expert in securities law, a litigator, and as an active member of the Navy JAG Reserve he was asked by the Navy Judge Advocate General to take on the task of helping former Vietnam Navy Prisoners of War help recover money which they had invested in fraudulent bonds. Mr. Nichols spent three years in federal courts throughout the country successfully prosecuting those who had sold the fraudulent bonds to the former POWs. He continued to carry on an active law practice, until he retired in 2002 due to illness. He is survived by his wife Elizabeth Knipe Nichols, his son Michael, his daughters Deborah and Stephanie, his former wife Elisabeth B. Nichols, and three grandchildren. He will be buried in Arlington National Cemetery. In lieu of any flowers the family is requesting that donations be made to the City of Hope, attn: Central Processing, 1500 E.
