Sheila Latasa was what Goethe referred to as a "beautiful soul" (schoene Seele). She filled the most quotidian events with beauty and light. I recall one incident from the latter half of the 1960s when I had befriended Brian Latasa and one of his sidekicks, Kevin Burke. Kevin had inadvisedly crawled inside a discarded septic tank and came out with lime extract in one of his eyes. He had to wear an eye patch for weeks. One day Brian and I were ribbing Kevin about how odd he looked, and Sheila came out of the kitchen and exclaimed: "It looks positively gallant!" We broke up laughing.

It would take quite a while to catalog all of Sheila's wonderful traits as a human being, but if I could point out one it would be her inabilty to bear animosity towards others. She believed most conflicts could be resolved positively, and acted on that belief. Sheila had nothing in common with those smaller minds - unfortunately all around us - that like to define themselves by means of antagonism to others. In this respect, those of us who had the great fortune to know her and survive her as well, have nothing short of a moral example to follow.

Sheila welcomed me into her home and family many years ago and I always appreciated her love and acceptance. Thanks to the whole Latasa family for the friendships over all these years.

My aunt Sheila, a bright and curious soul, never ceased to be charmed and amazed by the little things in life and never let the big things overwhelm her. It was a true privilege to share the moments we had. It was a fun trip.

Dear Family,

I have only the warmest memories of Sheila as a colleague. Her gentle smile, her loving spirit, and her joy in teaching created an environment that radiated the love of God and promoted His peace in relationships. She was a joy and a blessing, and I look forward to seeing her again in heaven. I hope your knowledge of her new home will provide you with great comfort until you are all reunited again.

My love and prayer,
Bonnie Miller
