Stan Gordon Obituary

November 15, 1937 - October 6, 2022 Stan Gordon was born on November 15, 1937 and died on October, 6, 2022. Stan, son of Lillian Tarshis and Albert Tarshis, was born in Los Angeles, California. Stan is survived by his wife of 49 years Diana Flam Gordon, son Alan Gordon, daughter Pamela Reynolds (James), granddaughters Abby and Hannah Reynolds, and sister Lolo Berkoff (Albert). Stan was preceded in death by sister Ruth Batchelor. He also leaves many nieces and nephews. Stan was formerly known as Stanley Gordon Tarshis. He graduated from Verdugo Hills High School and Michigan State University. He was a private investigator for 48 years, was passionate about playing the piano, skiing, gymnastics, the Raiders and Broadway musicals. He made 39 parachute jumps and had a love of diving. He gave incredible speeches any opportunity he got and always had funny jokes to tell about any subject, especially a dirty joke.

His greatest joy and achievement was being a gymnast. He was a Verdugo Hills gymnast whose Horizontal Bars specialty earned L.A. City runner-up honors in his senior year. He then went for college gymnastics to Michigan State University, where he won an NCAA silver medal in 1958 and gold medals in 1959 and 1960. He captured Big Ten championships in that event three times (1958-1960).

In 1960, he was chosen as the MSU Big Ten Conference Medal of Honor winner. Competing in Southern California major meet competitions in 1960, 1962, and 1964, Stan won the Horizontal Bar event at the Metro AAU, Senior AAU and prestigious Pasadena National Invitational. In 2017, Stan was inducted into the Southern California Jewish Sports Hall of Fame.

Stan continued participating in gymnastics for more than 50 additional years. He built a pool in his backyard with swinging rings, a high diving board, a trampoline and a high bar. Gymnasts from all over Los Angeles came over to Stan's house for many years to practice tricks over his pool. On labor day, more than 100 gymnasts would show up.

Stan Gordon will be greatly missed. He will be laid to rest on Sunday 10/9/22 at 1pm at Eden Memorial Park in Mission Hills.

Summer Sundays in Stan's backyard attracted many gymnasts. Here is Stan watching me do a triple somersault off Stan's rings.

i1NCAA. I was driving down Ventura Blvd. a month or so ago and saw the license plate. Although I tried to catch up, the red lights were in the way. It had been over 20 years since I saw that plate but instantly knew who it belonged to. We spent many years working out in the gym at Valley College and your back yard. You respected me for my gymnastics talents and professional achievements but I had the utmost respect for you. Not only were you the number one Horizintal bar Champion in the United States during your college years but you went on to establish a beautiful family and home. You shared your home with gymnasts from all over the world and we all had the times of our lives with you. Your jokes were gut wrenching funny and your smile indelible. God Bless you Stan Gordon. Thank you for making my youth so much fun and memorable. Rest in Peace.

I am a researcher for the Men's Collegiate Gymnastics coaches Association and we sponsor an annual Awards Banquet and at the Banquet we publish and present to all in attendance, a souvenir Printed Program and in the Program we publish a bio and a photo (or two) of any of our gymnastics family that has passed away in the past year. Stan was a significant part of our history and we could appreciate your help in preparing his bio and photo for the 2023 Awards Banquet. Jerry Wright: [email protected]
