Stuart MYERS Obituary
October 24, 1934 - July 1, 2025 Born in Westham, London, England, Stuart Myers passed away peacefully in his home in Playa Vista, Los Angeles at the age of 90.
His earliest memories were of the bombings in London during the Blitzkrieg of WWII. At age 6, he and his brother Howard, 8, were sent to live in Wales with 2 sister sponsors to get away from the dangers, while his parents stayed to keep the family business running.
Stuart was ambitious and self-driven from a very early age. He decided he wanted to be an architect and was accepted to the prestigious Architectural Association of London. After applying himself and becoming eligible to graduate, he was told he was too young. In the meantime, he and his cousin enjoyed hitchhiking across Europe for 6 months where they had many adventures.
After graduating, Stuart decided to go to the USA. It was on the Queen Mary en route where he met his future wife to be, Vera McColgan, an Irish ice skating champion travelling with the Ice Capades show to tour America. In 1961 they got married in Troy, NY but soon left for California. Upon landing in Los Angeles, they decided to make it home. After several different moves and locations, they settled into a beautiful home in Hancock Park where they lived for 20 years and raised 3 children.
During this time in the early 1970's, Stuart veered from architecture towards getting his real estate license and teaching himself about property investment. With his entire family to take care of as the sole breadwinner, he had the confidence and courage to start his own business, and was able to pool many friends and associates together to invest with him. He had a knack for finding the right properties to make for successful returns.
Stuart always felt opportunities abounded in America if one applied himself, and he was very much an example of that. One of his most proud moments was when he became an American citizen in 1979. In the decade to follow, Stuart had the terrible misfortune to experience the immense grief of losing his son, Scott, and several years later, his daughter, Marchelle, well before their time.
Needing a change, Stuart bought a house in the golfing community of Mountaingate above the Sepulveda Pass. Stuart and Vera loved playing golf so it was a natural fit. They also loved to travel the US and abroad to play golf or to ski with longtime friends. England and Ireland became regular destinations and it was during this time Stuart found a large property on Clew Bay in Westport, Ireland to purchase near family of Vera's. It was the achievement of his lifetime as an architect and property investor to design and build a beautiful home inspired by the architect, Frank Lloyd Wright, whom he revered.
Although he became a US citizen, Stuart never lost his accent and was always a true English gentleman both in manners and dress. He also played the piano beautifully, with music by the Gershwin's being amongst his favorites to play. Stuart was smart, honest, disciplined and modest. He loved and cared deeply for his family and his friends and he took a great and quiet pride in being able to provide for his family's comfort and safety. He was a good man, and will be deeply missed by his remaining daughter, Juanita, as well as other close friends and relatives.
