Albert Lum Obituary

Albert Jan Ing Lum Albert Jan Ing Lum passed away peacefully on Tuesday April 8, at the age of 86 after a prolonged illness. He was born on April 17, 1921 in Honolulu, where he attended McKinley High School and the University of Hawaii. He was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Army Corps of Engineers in 1945. He graduated from Harvard University in 1951 with a Masters in Soil Foundation Engineering, which he capped with an Advanced Degree in Civil Engineering from MIT the following year. In 1953, he moved to California and eventually settled in Long Beach, building a vibrant family with his wife, Florence (nee Loo) while working at the height of the Cold War for North American Aviation/Rockwell International, Space Technology Laboratories/TRW and finally for the Aerospace Corporation, from which he retired in 1987. Al and Flo believed strongly in serving their community and church. Al was a cherished moderator of the Crossroads Community Church (UCC) in Lakewood, CA for many years and was also deeply committed to the Community Church of Honolulu. He was devoted to his six children, giving them a comprehensive musical education and a taste for competitive excellence. Al would attend every performance that his children were part of, often eagerly recording them. They proudly carry on the strong work ethic, mor al accountability, and desire to contribute to society that he so carefully instilled in them. He was a passionate tennis player, and would play almost daily. Although he lived in Long Beach, CA for over 53 years, he loved Hawaii and would visit his friends and family there as often as he could. His graciousness and Aloha spirit touched many people and he will be greatly missed. He is preceded in death by his wife, Florence; his brother, Richard Lum and his sister, Winifred Ching. He is survived by his sist er, Jane Chow of Honolulu and his six children who reside in California: Albert Lum (Colleen), Mark Lum (Cyndy), Janice Dallons (Jon), Arthur Lum (Yukling), Nancy Korb (James), John Lum and ten grandchildren.
