Frank Blair Obituary

Frank C. Blair, Jr., DDS Frank C. Blair, Jr., DDS of Long Beach, CA, died on January 10, 2011, at the age of 92. Frank was born on August 1, 1918 in Long Beach, CA to parents Frank and Alta Blair. He attended Long Beach schools and graduated from Wilson High School in 1936. After two years at Long Beach City College, Frank went on to USC where he received his B.S. and his D.D.S. degrees in 1942. During World War II, Frank was commissioned into the US Navy Dental Corp in 1942. He was assigned as Lt. (j.g) USN aboard the USS New Jersey, the first dentist for the ship's inaugural tour of duty in the South Pacific. He also served as a dentist for the Marine Corp from 1945-46 in San Diego, CA. On January 20, 1945 he married Ruth Caryl in Los Angeles, CA. In 1946, he completed his active duty and returned to Long Beach, CA to establish his own dental practice until 1991. From 1991-1995, Frank had an emergency weekend dental practice in Avalon, CA. Frank was passionate about music. He played the saxophone and clarinet and in numerous bands and orchestras- the Windjammers, LB Symphony Orchestra, in church on Sundays, the Yachtsmen and the USC Marching Band. A favorite pastime was to serenade Avalon Harbor from the bow of his boat or his balcony. Frank's enthusiasm for music contributed to the growth and development of local public schools and alma maters, Wilson HS, LBCC and USC. Frank was generous and persistent in his vision that kids deserve the best of all chances to succeed. He spent much of his time and efforts raising money for public school programs. He was loved and respected as a doer and an outspoken advocate of what was best for students. He had a deep commitment to supporting youth and their programs through financial assistance, praise, mentorship, and encouragement for pursuit of a higher education. Frank was a member of the El Bekal Shrine, Masonic Lodge #389, Long Beach Elks, USC Dental School Board of Counselors, ADA, CDA, president of the Harbor Dental Society, Children's Dental Health Foundation, Catalina Conservancy, Avalon VFW Post # 4682, Avalon Booster Club, Wilson HS Booster Club, Covenant Presbyterian Church, Long Beach Yacht Club, Marina Yacht Club-Commodore '68, past commander of the Long Beach U.S. Power Squadron and the USS New Jersey BB-62 Veterans. Frank donated thousands of hours to youth-building causes. He provided free dental screening for local school children, campaigned for fluoridated water in Long Beach and was active in Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Camp Fire Girls, Indian Guides, Gray Y and Youth Baseball Associated teams. Some of his greatest accomplishments were working closely with the Santa Catalina Island Company, LBUSD and philanthropist Cliff Tucker to build the Little Red School House at Two Harbors and rebuilding the Campanile Tower at Wilson High School. Frank and his wife were world travelers enjoying over 50 cruises. He was an avid sports fan with a special love for Angels baseball (original Angels season ticket holder) and USC football. He enjoyed becoming a member of the USC Scholarship Club and traveling with the Trojan football team. Frank was always there cheering on his grandchildren at various sporting events. Frank is survived by his wife, Ruth. Their children are Frank C. Blair III (Wanda), Nancy Blair, Peter Blair (Donna) and Robert Blair (Karen). I have so many memories of this fine man it would be hard to list. He filled my first cavity..and many more. Almost talked me into going to USC to be a dentist. Loved our boating years, took me on the USS New Jersey for a private tour. Always had a smile on his face. He truly earned his right to be part of mankind. Now God has a great dentist to take care of him as Frank did for so many while with us. My deepest sympathy to his family.

Dr.(LT) Frank Blair was a superb instructor in operative at USC. We all enjoyed his warmth and honesty. Later, while I was stationed aboard USS New Jersey (BB-62)..which was Dr. Blair's old ship, I had the pleasure to show him around. He will be missed. What a quality man! My Dad, George Clapp, passed away this time last year. It was nice to see his remaining buddies with whom he had grown up as a boy in Long Beach at his memorial, including Frank. My mother, Jane (Crotinger) Clapp, had dated Frank at one point.

As our home movies and pictures will attest, my parents had many wonderful and fun times at parties such as bridge and New Years with their close friends: Frank and Ruth Blair, Dave and Martha MacClagen, Walt and Carol Hooker, George and Bula Pearson and Art and Vernice Orr. I also had fun on trips with the Blairs going on their boat, the Sweet Tooth, to Catalina; and I recall being with them when the Queen Mary pulled into her current resting place in 1971. Frank, as our family dentist, was excellent [but that root canal sure hurt! :)]

As Frank’s memorial will attest, I salute such a fine gentlemen as there ever was in Frank Blair. My parents and their friends were better people because of the likes of him, and we were all happy to know him. I see that he followed Christ in the Presbyterian Church. May God give his family comfort at this time and may we all meet again in Heaven...

I just remember when the Senior's graduated Dr. Blair and his wife always gifted everyone of them with a gold pen inscribed with their name.

He was a mainstay of Avlaon, playing the horn on the 4th of July from his balcony, and Christmas songs on days prior to Christmas and Christmas morn. He resolved a tooth ache for me one day when we were visiting on my Dad's boat, met us at his office, and took the x-rays, and filled it.

My deepest sympathy to his family, and friends.

I cared about, and respected Frank Blair like he was my own father. My few times on the Sweet Tooth II and staying in Catalina are some of my favorite memories. The Naples Boat parade and a pot of "Singeing Cider" kept Bob and I laughing for years. I will sleep well tonight thinking about and remembering such a kind, thoughtful, and loving man. Tears have, and will be shed. He was an inspiration to many and will be greatly missed.

I have many fond memories of Dr. Blair and am so thankful he was part of my life. Dr. Blair was instrumental in my admittance to USC. He later acted as a reference for me when I was beginning my professional career. I have great memories hanging out on the Sweet Tooth with the Blair family and being driven around the island in the golf cart with Dr. Blair at the wheel and holding on for dear life. . He has always been someone who I admired and respected immensely and enjoyed his quick wit. His philanthropic commitment is unsurpassed. His was a life well lived. He will be greatly missed, but his name and his legacy will live on. My heart and prays go out to Ruth, they were quite the team. I see so much of Dr. Blair in his son Bob and his grandson, Kyle. I have been very blessed to have the entire Blair family in my life. They are a one of kind of family!
