When I was 15 I signed up to get a penpal from a foreign country. I was very fortunate to receive Michael's name but I don't think he was very excited. He was several years older than I was and already attending University, but he politely wrote me back. Luckily, I was an avid reader and we found we had much we could share. He quite enjoyed it when I thought that his father had something to do with book publishing when he told me his father was a bookmaker. Actually I figured it out when Michael mentioned things were really busy at home because a big horserace was coming up. He was always kind and encouraging to me. I can understand why he was well loved and respected. I think I still have a photo of him at about age 20...handsome, kind, and intelligent face.

To Fr Gleesons family, He married us almost 39 years ago next month, and buried both of my parents. We live out of state now, but when we came home to California we always looked to see him. We were on our way to mass today at St Cornelius when we discovered his passing. Our hearts are broken. What a wonderful, lovely, devoted man and a real servant of God. He served us in so many ways throughout our years. Rest In Peace, Fr Gleeson. We will truly miss you but are grateful you are in Heaven with the Lord you loved. May we meet again.

Father Mike,
I am so heartbroken finding out about your passing. Words cannot describe how much of an angel you were in my life when I needed one. I remember the first time we met and we sat/talked for almost two hours. Instantly I felt a fatherly connection to you. You were like my dad I never had. We shared our experiences and stories of our lives only to find out we had so much in common. I cannot thank you enough and I will miss you greatly. Thank you and I hope you're watching down from heaven guiding me as I go .

Fr. Mike was a great priest. He was a great listener and counselor. His warm smile made everyone feel welcome. My and my familys lives are so much richer for having him in them. He left us much too soon. We love him and will forever miss him. Our deepest condolences to his family and our gratitude for sharing him with us.
May you enjoy sharing jokes and puns in heaven, beloved pastor.

My time with Father was too short. We were only acquainted about 3 years ago when he was my priest, the head of the church. Then he became my client. Then Father became my advisor on family matters. And finally, last year, Father Mike was my friend. There are very few people as extraordinary as Father Mike. He was witty, fun, and one of the most generous and loving people Ive ever come across. Its hard to imagine St. Cornelius without him. May we always have Father Mikes spirit in us so we can continue his legacy of love.

Saint Cornelius is my home parish. Our family moved away. I would return occasionally for fiestas and met Father Gleeson a few times. He was very humble and wise.

Father Michael had a great sense of humor. He was a wonderful priest. He will be remembered for his kindness to my entire family. He was well loved when we had him at St Joseph's as an assistant back in the day when he was there with Fr. Reardon and Msgr. Reilly. Fr. Gleeson was the main force in starting the Movement For A Better World at St. Joseph's and it is still going strong today. My mom and I would see him in later years when we went to 5pm mass during the week at St. Cornelius. Though you left us suddenly, you will be with your folks now. Rest in peace.

I remember the words Fr. Michael Gleeson spoke to me. He spoke words of wisdom that came from above. He told me that I am in the Lord's hands. The Lord is on my team, and the Lord only wants the absolute best for me, and all His' children. I have experienced so much emotional pain, and I used to wear an emotional mask so that people were not able to see how much the pain they inflicted on me truly affected me. I did not want for them to see all the hurt in me. I continue to embrace Fr. Mike's words. I am more at peace, and I trust the Lord as He continues to pull me through. Thank the Lord for Fr. Michael, and his words of wisdom. I know that Fr. Michael is resting in peace. Fr. Mike, I really thank the Lord that you were one of my earthly angels.

Toni and I have know Father Mike since the mid-1970's. We enjoyed his down to earth homilies and the uplifting messages they provided. We respected his experiences in life having been assigned to more troubles areas in Los Angeles County. He encouraged us to visit his Ireland and were welcomed with open arms by his family.
He was a good man, a good priest and served as a model for loving God. He spoke his mind, yet was gentle in his delivery knowing that kindness overcame all ills.
We will certainly miss him.

Father Mike was a joy to be around. I loved his sermons and how good he made me feel to be there. He left us all too soon - he will be making the angels and St. Peter smile at his humor and kindness. May he rest in peace. Condolences to his family.

St. Cornelius is our home because of Fr. Mike. He has blessed my family for the last 11+ years. He baptized me and my two youngest children through RCIA and Blessed my marriage to Paul. He counseled me on so many occasions and it was always exactly what I needed. He was a wonderful friend and I will miss him dearly. I take great consolation knowing that he will be with our Lord and be a part of our eternal family.

Father Mike embodied my vision of the ultimate Catholic priest. As a 44 year member of St. Cornelius Parish, I looked forward to attending Mass when he was the celebrant. His homilies were a true personal inspiration, and when they began to be printed in our bulletin, I could read and treasure them many times. He was a humanitarian, a friend and a spiritual guide. I can visualize him watching over us from heaven.

Fr. Mike was a part of the Hogan family for decades. When he was at St. Joseph's, he was a frequent guest at Sunday dinners. My parents stayed with his parents in Ireland, where his nieces were made to perform some traditional Irish dances which my mother always remembered with a smile. He officiated at both my parent's funerals, as well as my sister Mary's and my brother Christopher's. A couple years ago when I had pneumonia he came to the hospital and gave my unction of the sick. During summers my brother Kevin often had him over for a BBQ or a birthday party. How we will always miss someone who, I fear to say, we perhaps took for granted. This is a melancholy truth to me now. God bless you Mike. And thank you forever.
