Thomas Stewart Obituary

July 16, 1931 - March 24, 2022 Thomas Edward Stewart of Long Beach, CA passed away on March 24, 2022, at the age of 90 years old, after many years with Alzheimer's Disease. Tom was predeceased by his brother, Donald Stewart, his mother, Helen Stewart, and father, Sydney Stewart. Tom was born and raised in Belmont Shore, CA. He went to Wilson High School, Long Beach City College, and USC, where he ran track. After college, Tom enlisted in the United States Coast Guard. He became a Long Beach Lifeguard, working at Alamitos Bay and was later selected into the Long Beach Lifeguard Hall of Fame. Tom was a retired Long Beach Fireman, as well as being an Insurance Broker, owning Stewart Insurance Service in Long Beach, which was founded by his grandfather in 1883. Tom was very active in the Long Beach Community. Tom was Past President of the Long Beach Century Club, Past President of the Long Beach Independent Insurance Agents Association, he was on the L.A. County Fire Commission, an Honorary and lifetime Member of the Long Beach Police Motor Officers Association, as well as being a lifetime member of the L.B. Police Officers Assoc., Board Member of the Los Alamitos Rotary, Past President of the Long Beach Honorary Police Officers Assoc. Tom was a Past Vice President and founding member of the Long Beach Grand Prix Committee of 300, Past President of Retired Police and Firemen of America, Founding member of Crimestoppers, Founder and First President of the Long Beach Police K-9 Officers, Past President of the Long Beach Community Hospital Foundation, Supporter of Long Beach State Athletics, Board Member of the Long Beach Redevelopment Agency, Past President of Long Beach Dare, Member of the Long Beach Civic Light Opera, Founder of the Tom Stewart Long Beach Police and Fire Golf Tournaments, supporter of Long Beach Search and Rescue, Long Beach City College Advisory Board, Member at Old Ranch Country Club, Tom was a 32nd Degree Mason, he was a longtime El Bekal Shriner and a member of the Jesters. Tom was also a member of the Lakewood Presbyterian Church. During Christmastime, Tom was Santa Claus. Along with the Long Beach Police and Fire Departments, they visited and brought gifts to the sick children in the Long Beach hospitals. They also brought bikes and gifts to the kids in the Long Beach schools. Tom is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Jean Stewart, daughters, Sue Towne (Steve), and Sandy Lamb (Mike); grandchildren Sarah Hatch (Steve), Scott Towne (Anna), Steve Towne, Logan Lamb (Kristine), Madison Lamb and Matt Hendrickson and his great grandchildrenm Ashley, Caterina, Sydney, Ayla, Mason, Drew, and Aubrey. After 61 years in Long Beach together, Tom and Jean moved to Sun City in Lincoln Hills, CA, then to Eskaton in Roseville, and now Jean resides in Elk Grove, CA. There will be no funeral services. In lieu of flowers, please donate to a charity of your choice.

Dear Jean and family, I offer my condolences to you Jean and family. I remember Tom and Lou were good friends in the Shrine. He passed away 6 years ago and I am remarried. Tom. was surely an active man and left a large legacy in the community. Sincerely, Claudia
