Dean Hill Obituary

Roy Dean Hill (Dr. Dean Hill), 84 years old, of Las Cruces, New Mexico, passed away Tuesday, August 22, 2017 from complications related to Parkinson's Disease. He was born April 7, 1933 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Edna Fern Nelson Hill and Samuel Roy Hill. He was the oldest of five children, followed by two brothers, Lynn and David and two sisters, Lorna Burnett and Annette Onstott. He was an avid boy scout and attained the rank of Eagle Scout at age 14. He graduated from Salt Lake City South High School in 1951. He served in the Army infantry in the Korean Conflict from 1951-1953. He married Jean Okelberry Hill in the Salt Lake City Temple, November 21, 1956. He received a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from the University of Utah in 1956. He received a Master's Degree in Chemistry from New Mexico A&M (now New Mexico State University) in 1958. He received a PhD in Chemistry from Michigan State University in 1961. He taught as a teaching assistant at the University of Utah, and then as a college professor for 55 years from 1956-2011, first at New Mexico State University (NMSU) from 1956-1958, second, at Michigan State University from 1958-1961, third, at NMSU from 1961-1968, fourth at Rose Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute, Indiana from 1968-1979 and finally finished his professional teaching career at NMSU teaching in the Mechanical Engineering and Chemistry Departments from 1981-2011. Dr. Hill was named College Professor of the year eleven times. His enthusiasm for learning and sharing his knowledge resonated with students and he became one of the most recognized and loved professors on campus. He was extensively published in professional journals and magazines as a technical writer. He was featured many times in Hot Rod Magazine and owned a complete collection of Hot Rod Magazines ever published. He also had short stories published in science fiction publications. He wrote about engines, engine fuels, race cars, and classic cars. His hobbies included drag racing, re-building engines and restoring classic hotrods and running his engine dyno. He was the keynote speaker seven times at the Advanced Engine Technical Conferences in Florida. He served as the head of NHRA fuel check from 1958-1975. He developed a racing fuel called H&H racing fuels. He ran cars at the Bonneville Salt Flats and attended the yearly races at the Salt Flats into his 70s.
His interests and enthusiasms were not only in the field of science. He was a voracious reader and retained vast amounts of knowledge he acquired from reading. He loved to memorize long passages from poems and movies and would recite them at top speed; Lewis Carroll's Jabberwocky was a particular favorite! He enjoyed reading science fiction and spy novels. Dr. Hill loved to sing. In fact, he met his wife at a choir concert. He was a member of the University of Utah Choirs, The Jay Welch Chorale and the Dona Ana Lyric Opera Society. He participated in more than 30 operas and musicals under the direction of Dr. Jon Linford from 1989-2004 at NMSU. He sang, acted, worked on sets and did whatever was necessary to make the productions a success. As his grandchildren watched his summer performances, Dr. Hill was able to share his love of musical performance with them, instilling in many a love of chorale and classical music.
He will be remembered as a fun loving, outgoing individual, with a sense of humor, and a twinkle in his eye. He was one to take his grandchildren on camping trips to the City of Rocks and White Sands National Park. He loved to fly kites. He created the "perfect" chocolate chip cookie recipe as only a scientist could: through endless experimentation. He was also famous for his homemade pizza, strawberry ice cream, and rice pudding. He loved entertaining guests and making new friends.
He took many adventures with his children and wife. He traveled extensively in the United States and abroad. In his younger years he took long-distance bicycle trips through California, Utah, and New Mexico.
He was a lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served faithfully in various positions, including Bishopric Counselor, High Councilor, and Seminary teacher. He and his wife Jean served a mission at the Church Genealogical Center in Salt Lake City, Utah from 2004-2006.
Dr. Hill is survived by his four children, Cynthia Webb (CJ), David Hill (Vivian), Rebecca Critchfield (GL) and Denise "Blossom" Murray (Brad). He is also survived by all 17 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jean Hill (2015), his brother Lynn Hill (2006) and his brother David Hill (1949).
Dr. Hill's funeral services will be held Saturday, September 9th, 2017 at 10 a.m. at the LDS Chapel, 3210 Venus Street, Las Cruces, NM. Memorial services and burial in the Salt Lake City Cemetery, Salt Lake City, Utah on September 26, 2017.

I'll never forget Dr. Hill's commitment to learning. I'll also never forget how he told us he spent $300 or more on a brand new Hewlett-Packard engineering calculator back in the 70's and then proceeded to calculate different values of e raised to a certain power.
He himself was a lifelong student of many things including how to improve engines on his dynamometer. His dynamometer experiments were the high point of his educating us. Rest in peace, Dr. Hill.

Dr. Dean and I shared many memories over the years. Dean ran a dragster at the Albuquerque Dragway. The poster called it "Dr. Deans Hydazine Machine."

Thank you Dean Hill, This was written to him on Sept. 28 2015. and read at the geezer luncheon.
Dean without you accepting me to work with you at the 1964 Winternationals event and Dale Ham recommending me to you, All the exsisting success's today of the Albuqurque Dragway would not have occurred.
Dean You started me on the path of working NHRA National events for 50+ years ( 1964 to 2017)
With out my working those NHRA National events, I would never have been able to contact all the top racers that we booked in to Albuquerque Dragway over the 10 years I managed it. Tommy Ivo, Don Garlits, Don Prudhomme, Dickie Harrell , Gene Snow, Little Red Wagon, Wild Bill Shrewsberry and so many more. All going back to Dean Hill. This letter is to thank you for over 50 years of help but most importantly your friendship. Signed as you always called me" Dale Wayne" Dale W. Schafer

I have many fond memories of Dean and Jean. Dean was a counselor in my Bishopric in the 1970s in Terre Haute IN. I sang in a barbershop quartet for about 10 years with he and Jean. We practiced at his house at 7:00 every Tuesday. Dean helped me keep my automobiles running. He said he would fix my car if I tuned his piano. Later he said, "I will teach you how to fix your car if you continue to tune my piano." I will always have fond memories of Dean.

Sympathies to the Hill Family! I enjoyed seeing your dad one day when he was working at the FHC in SL. We were both surprised to see each other after many years! I remember Thanksgiving dinners at your house in TH! May good memories be yours!

I will never forget Dr. Hill when I worked as a secretary at the Mechanical Engineering department at NMSU many years ago. When he walked through the door every day, he was always smiling, always happy, and always took the time to ask me how my day was going. He once shared with me that he told his new classes each semester one of the keys to a successful academic career was to get to know the janitors and the secretaries. He said "the janitors have all the keys to open any lab or room in the whole building for needed emergencies at any time. And the secretaries have all the answers to everything else you don't know, but might need." Wise man that Dr. Hill. He also shared with me his "best chocolate chip cookie recipe ever!" My family and I have been enjoying that recipe he perfected for years. I have the honor of having that recipe in his original handwriting. I will treasure it always, as I will also treasure the years I knew Dr. Hill. He was a wonderful human being.

Dean Hill is one of the most influential men in my life. I know first hand that he was an extraordinary teacher. However, as successful as he was as a university professor, he was even more so as a missionary. I am eternally grateful that he taught me the Gospel of Jesus Christ, a subject of which he had a profound understanding. He was an authentically spiritual man who was most instrumental in my conversion and baptism into the church. That big event occurred after several years of very close friendship. Numerous lengthy drag racing trips were choice times and opportunities to discuss gospel doctrine. He was a mentor and confidant, and generously included me in many, many wonderful activities with his family. Dean, Jean and the children became my family away from home. I consider myself blessed to know and love Dean and his family.

The memories of Dean and his influences on some impressionable young college boys interested in engineering and drag racing is still rich in my mind. First met Dean in '63-'64 and he was a lifetime friend and mentor and will be sorely missed. His encouragement came to fruition for many of us that became engineers or with careers in the sciences. Racing was fun and was the result of applied science. Motorsports has lost a strong advisor and those of us that knew him have lost a friend. One can never tell, maybe "Dr. Dean's Hydrazine Machine" will be fired up again. I hope you are at peace old friend.

I was fortunate to know Dr. Dean as a student at Rose. He was a natural teacher, a mentor, and friend. He was my freshman Chemistry instructor and I took his popular Engines class as a senior. His impact on my life has been immeasurable. The summer we rented the house next door, ran his Texaco station, and campaigned the former family grocery-getter as a D Stock Automatic and riding on the Zebra Truck was the best summer of my life. We never won much but we always had a good time. Dr Dean always had an encouraging word and was always teaching about life. He called us that summer to work Fuel Check at the '71 U.S Nationals. That was 46 years ago and I'm still running FC at drag races. Dean's influence continues. Living next door to the Hill's was a joyful experience with Becca, Cynthia, Neecie, and David running around the house. Pancake breakfasts Saturday morning with the family were special times for a broke college kid. I'll always think of Jean as "Mom Hill" because she treated us like one of her own.

I will miss you Dr Dean. Thank you for all the many great memories.

To my wonderful brother, you made me laugh as a child and always had a joke or two to share. Even though I have not seen you much the past several years I will miss you and your sweet spirit. I love my big brother. Peace to you.
