I. Homer Martin, 92, formerly of Stevens, passed away on January 11, 2017, at the United Zion Retirement Community, Lititz. Homer was born in East Earl Township on February 27, 1924 to Hoover H. and Emma Nolt Martin, and raised on a farm. Married to Mary Elizabeth Burkhart on November 23, 1944, they recently observed their 72nd wedding anniversary.
Homer worked as a feed salesman for Martin's Feed Mill, Ephrata, which later became Sensenig's Mill. Later he worked for Stanford Seed Co, as a territory manager for a number of years until retirement, when he sold seeds for Wilken Seeds, Pontiac, Ill. He and his wife owned and operated a nut and dried fruit stand at Green Dragon for a number of years. He also served as Pastor at Haaks United Zion Church for 20 years.
He loved music and played harmonica. He also sang in the "Tidings of Joy" chorus (Akron) which later became "Gems of Grace" (Ephrata) which had a radio program on WGSA on Sunday afternoons for a number of years. He served on the United Zion Camp Grove Board for 36 years.
Homer and his wife loved to travel and were in all of the States, except Alaska. They also traveled to Spain, Rome, Mexico and El Salvador.
In addition to his wife, Homer is survived by three children, Rev. Clyde (Sharon Kilhefner), Akron, Jay (Barbara Engstrom), Minn., Beverly (George Martin), Stevens; a brother, J. Wilmer (Jane) Martin, Ephrata; and a brother-in-law, Phares Musser, Ephrata. In addition there are eight grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren. He loved all his family. Predeceased by sisters, Emma Nolt, Anna Mae Haldeman, Alberta Musser, and L. Ruth Knauer.
Relatives and friends are invited to a viewing on Sunday, January 15, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Ephrata United Zion Church, 408 E Fulton St., Ephrata. An additional viewing will be from 10 to 11 a.m. on Monday, January 16, at the church followed by the funeral service at 11 a.m., with Rev. Carl Eberly and Rev. Richard Martin officiating. Interment will be in Groffdale Mennonite Cemetery.
