Easter Sunday 1971, a 20 yr old infantry soldier from Shamokin Pa. and a 36yr old Catholic Chaplin priest from Mount Carmel Pa. met in the jungles
of Viet Nam . We secured an area for the Louch helicopter to drop off the Chaplin. Wondering why he was here with us in the jungle, he informed us it was Easter Sunday and wanted to have a service and pray with us. That started a 49 yr friendship with Father Berger .
In the future he blessed and prayed over us before we entered combat and again during on occasion in combat. When we came out of the jungle and back to the military base, he would find us and encourage us to attend his services. He got annoyed when soldiers would curse and said "Can I ask you all to just stop cursing !" The soldiers would apologize and five minutes later start cursing again.
I have a lot to thank Father. Thanks for praying and blessing me as often
as he did. For giving me my Catholic Last Rites when I was wounded and he thought I was dying. Going to see my mother when he returned to the states. Coming to see me at Valley Forge Army Hospital. Marrying Christine and I. Inviting Christine and I to his 50 yr Jubilee. The Easter and Christmas card exchanges that we keep and display every year and the informational material packages he would send to me for my comment.
Thank you Father for everything. You are one of the good ones that God created. May you rest in peace.
