Carolyn "Jean" Shaffer

1943 - 2026

Carolyn "Jean" Shaffer, 82, of New Bethlehem, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 28, 2026, at Jefferson Manor in Brookville.

Born February 26, 1943, in Indianola - the middle of five children - she was the daughter of the late Darl and Ida (Beer) Crawford.

Jean married Elbert "Sonny" Shaffer on October 6, 1962.

She worked in accounting for The Leader-Vindicator, many years at McCauley Trucking and lastly as an insurance administrator for McRail Insurance.

Jean took great pride in her work and treasured the relationships she built with her coworkers.

She also served on the New Bethlehem Library Board, where she generously gave her time and shared her love of books and reading with others.

Throughout her life, she was known for her kindness, warmth, strong work ethic and unwavering dedication to her family.

Besides reading, she loved playing cards, board games and building puzzles. She cherished getting together with her Card Club friends and treasured spending time with her family.

She is survived by her husband; two brothers, Sam Crawford and Dick Crawford; two daughters, Dorinda Bugos of Pittsburgh and Michelle Dwyer (Dave) of Wilmington, Del.; six grandchildren, Bridget Kropiewnicki (Joe), Katie Dwyer, Maggie Baird (James), Kim Dwyer, Tom Dwyer and Danny Bugos; and three great-grandchildren, Mark and Madison Kropiewnicki, and Lilly Baird.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Darl "Bud" Crawford; sister, Cheryl Metz; nephew, Brad Crawford; and grandson, David Patrick Dwyer.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, February 1, from 2 to 6 p.m., at the Alcorn Funeral Home in Hawthorn.

Additional visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. on Monday, February 2, 2026, at the New Bethlehem First Church of God, with a funeral service immediately following at 11 am.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Clarion Forest VNA/Hospice in her memory.

Jean will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew her.
