James Symes Obituary

SYMES, JAMES F. M.D. passed away on August 31, 2014 at the Nantucket Cottage Hospital in Nantucket, MA surrounded by his adoring family. After a year-long battle with prostate cancer, we reflect on all the ways he came into our lives. As a husband, father, friend, educator, and doctor, he forever left his mark. James was unselfishly dedicated to his family, friends, colleagues, and patients. He is survived by his devoted wife of almost 33 years, Joanne Symes, and his four loving children, Lindsay Symes, Christie (Symes) Stern, Blair Symes, and Christopher Symes. James was born in Edmonton, Alberta in 1945. He obtained his medical degree from the University of Alberta in 1969 and earned his Masters of Science in Experimental Surgery from McGill University in 1972. James interned in Ottawa before moving to Montreal to do his cardiac surgical training at Montreal General Hospital, Montreal Children's Hospital, McGill Cardiovascular and Thoracic Program, and Royal Victoria Hospital. He joined the staff of the Royal Victoria Hospital as a cardiac surgeon in July 1975, where he later became Chief of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery. In 1992, James and his family relocated to Wellesley, MA where they lived for 14 years. During this time, James was the Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Caritas St. Elizabeth's Medical Center of Boston. In 2006, James and Joanne moved to Coral Gables, FL and James became the Chief of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery at Miami VA Healthcare System. Besides saving countless lives as a world-class surgeon, James was also an educator, helping to train the next generation of doctors and surgeons. He was Assistant Professor of Surgery and later Program Director of the Vascular Surgical Training Program at McGill University, Professor of Surgery at Tufts University School of Medicine, and Professor of Surgery at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. While at Tufts University, James achieved national renown for his work with the late Dr. Jeffrey Isner on groundbreaking cardiovascular gene therapy. He is also an author and contributor to over 80 published studies on cardiovascular research. One of the greatest things about James was that anyone who ever spent time with him was profoundly touched by his selfless, gentle, patient, and loving demeanor. He was the epitome of a gentleman. James was a brilliant man, a compassionate husband and father, and a lover of life. Everything he did, he did with love and passion, living everyday to its fullest. He had an amazing laugh and smile that would fill and brighten any room. Aside from his many personal and professional accomplishments, James had many loves in his life. He was a dedicated New England Patriots fan, never missing a single game, recording each of them start to finish and re-watching every win. He always wanted to be a great golfer and while his performance wasn't quite up to PGA standards, spending hours searching for lost balls with his wife and friends, he loved playing all the same and savored every hole. You could often find him listening to classic jazz, delving into a great suspense novel on the deck, and reading the Boston Globe sports section and Wall Street Journal cover-to-cover. He loved good food, especially his wife's cooking, and great wine, particularly in the company of his family and friends. Visitation will be held in Wellesley, MA at George F. Doherty & Sons Funeral Home, 477 Washington St. (Rt.16), Wellesley, on Friday, September 5, 2014 from 4-8pm. A private service will be held on Saturday, September 6, 2014 at Woodlawn Cemetery in Wellesley with burial to follow. In lieu of flowers, the Symes family asks that memorial denotations be made to Dr. Alan Pollack's prostate cancer research. To donate, please make checks payable to "SCCC-Radiation Oncology" and include a memo line of "In memory of Dr. James Symes". Checks should be mailed to the Department of Radiation Oncology, Attn: Wendy Hernandez, 1475 NW 12 Avenue, Suite 1500, Miami FL 33136. For directions and guestbook gfdoherty.com.

Dear Dr. J F Symes' Family,

I was indeed a sad day to learn the premature death of Dr. J F Symes.

I worked with him in his clinical research protocols when he was at the Miami VA medical center.

He was an exceedingly a gentle, polite and an efficient and caring medical professional.

He was one of my professional references for my successful application for an employment at the University of Miami. I remain grateful ever for his magnanimous gesture to spend his time as a professional referee for me.

My deepest condolences to the family. I always cherish my memorable association with Dr. James F. Symes.

May his soul rest in peace and his family be given strength to bear the loss.

I just found out about Dr. Syme's death. He saved my life in 2009 at the Miami VA. Just this week a cardiologist in Naples after a heart cath told me the bypasses he constructed were "perfect". My tears are very late but my thanks will never be lost. David Davis

Deepest condolences to you and family.
My dear husband Kenneth Marlow (1935-2015) underwent a five-artery by-pass in May 1986 at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal. He gave my dear husband, father, grandfather 29 years extra of a beautiful life. We were married for 55 wonderful years. Just want to say "thank you" to James, to you and family. Hugs, Edna & Family

On the 7th of March 1996, Dr. James Symes performed a 5xCABG on me at St. Elizabeth's, which gave me, so far, 20 more very good years of life. He must have done it right, since it's still ticking strongly. Coming up on the 20th anniverary, I was thinking to write and thank him, only to find his death notice. Sad that I didn't think to write sooner. I only recall meeting Dr. Symes twice (while awake), once before surgery and once a few weeks after. He seemed to me a quiet and rather shy gentleman.

My sincere condolences to his family and my thanks for what he did for me, and I'm sure, many others.

Dr. Symes did 4 bypasses on me in 2012 at the Miami VA Hospital and I couldn't help but be impressed by his gentle and kind demeanor. He made me feel completely at ease. The world has lost a world class surgeon but most of all a great human being. I was shocked and very sorry by your passing Dr. Symes. My condolences to his family.

So many wonderful memories with Jim and Joanne and the girls. He was a man of enormous talent and an unbounded love of life. His huge smile and generous spirit will leave an indelible mark on all our lives. How can such a powerful and indominatable presence be gone so quickly. We will miss Jim so much.

I had the honor of working for Dr. Symes as a Physician Assistant in the Department of Cardiac Surgery at St. Elizabeth's in the late 1990s. I was privileged to assist him in the operating room during some of his pioneering work with VEGF, as well as a myriad of other challenging cardiac surgeries. I also was fortunate to be able to work side by side with Dr. Symes taking care of his patients; his warm demeanor and confidence gave them comfort and his true concern for them shone through in everything he did.

Dr. Symes was the consummate surgeon, mentor, friend and gentleman. May your many memories of his extraordinary life sustain you during your time of grief in his passing.

I could not imagine the day that I would mourn for Dr Symes' untimely passing
I came to know Dr Symes as a teacher when I was a medical student then a resident at McGill University and after a 20 years a colleague of his at the University of Miami.
My family has always been indebted to Dr Symes as he did the bypass surgery for my father at the Royal Victoria Hospital in 1987. I have always been indebted to dr Symes for being my teacher during my training years. It was truly a blessing of being his colleague here at UM.
My sincere condolences to dr Symes' family in this time of great loss
Dr Symes and you all will always be in our thoughts and prayers

Jim was the most devoted and loving and generous husband and father we have ever known. He ADORED Joanne and his children. We are still reeling with disbelief that we won't see Jim again on this earth but, will always remember him with gratitude and love and think alwasy of his laugh and generous spirit not only with his family and friends but with all who ever had the good fortune of knowing him. Jim will be greatly missed.
We send our love, sympathy and prayers to his loving family..
We are with you in spirit.

I met Jim while we were residents at McGill in the mid 1970s, thus I knew him for nearly 40 years. We went our separate ways after surgical training but I was pleasantly surprised when we were recruited to work at St. Elizabeth's in 1992. Learning that a surgeon if his caliber and fine reputation had made a move to St. Es, helped my decision to accept an equally rewarding opportunity to teach an practice in such a wonderful place. Jim was one of the finest surgeons I had ever met. Always a gentleman, he exuded confidence and elegance without arrogance, had a contagious smile and the quality of patient care was second to none.
When I think of Jim, I am reminded that life is to be enjoyed like he did. I will miss my admired colleague. My wife Linda and my entire family prays for him, Joanne and their children that they continue to celebrate this remarkable man.

I could not have asked for, or ever imagined, a better mentor, colleague, and friend. Jim's example, set in all aspects of his life, will forever serve as my humble goal.
