John Hynes Obituary

John Robert "Bob" Hynes, 93, of Manhattan Beach, Calif., and formerly of Bloomfield Hills and Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich., passed away on Friday, October 17, 2025 at the Tibor Rubin VA Hospital in Long Beach, Calif.

Born July 11, 1932 in Boston, Mass., he was a son of the late John Leo Hynes and Sarah Theresa Devereaux Hynes.

While a member of the United States Air Force, he met and married the former Jean E. Williams of New Bethlehem, daughter of the late Col. Donald S. and Viola M. Williams. After 48 years of marriage, she preceded him in death on May 21, 2003. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 18 years, Mary Brieden on September 25, 2023.

Bob was a veteran Detroit radio and television personality, moving to the Detroit area in 1966 to host the "Bob Hynes Morning Show" on ABC 7. While hosting the morning show, he interviewed many celebrities of the late 1960s, including Gordie Howe, Robert Goulet, Florence Henderson, Lucille Ball, Adam West, Cybill Shephard, Bob Newhart and others.

In the 1970s and 1980s Bob hosted an afternoon radio talk show and filled in on other radio and TV productions.

In 1972 he teamed up with producer Dan Kibee and actor Dom DeLuise to film the television show "Road Company." The pilot episode featured the city of Houston and included musical guests Kenny Rogers and Sheila MacRae as well as Apollo 12 astronaut Rick Gordon.

After a stint as a TV weatherman and radio show host, he fulfilled his lifelong dream by co-founding WYUR radio.

After retirement, Bob served on the board of the Yankee Air Museum (Michigan Flight Museum) and was active in the Grosse Pointe Men's Club.

Survivors include his sons, Michael (Rosalind) Hynes of Asheville, N.C. and Patrick (Andrea) Hynes of Manhattan Beach, Calif.; and four grandchildren, Declan Hynes, Chloe Hynes, Rose Hynes and Grace Hynes; as well as the seven children, 19 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren of Mary Brieden.

Bob is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews; and sisters-in-law, Judy Williams of New Bethlehem and Patricia Williams Frost of San Diego, Calif.

In addition to his parents and wives, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Elizabeth Ann Hynes; sisters, Phyllis Mauger, Joan Coveney and Conni Schultz; and brother, Ed Hynes; brother-in-law, Donald S. Williams Jr.; and sister-in-law, Catherine Williams Curti and her husband, Ciro.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 6 p.m. on Thursday, October 23, at the Rupert Funeral Home and Cremation Service chapel, located at 233 Penn Street in New Bethlehem.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Friday, October 24, 2025 at St. Charles Catholic Church, located at 201 Washington Street in New Bethlehem, with the Rev. Father Samuel Bungo, parish priest, serving as celebrant.

Interment will follow in the St. Charles Catholic Cemetery, with military honors accorded by the Walter W. Craig American Legion Post No. 354 of New Bethlehem.

Memories of him and his brothers and sisters will keep him (and those Hynes siblings) alive in our hearts forever. We are all better off for having known Uncle Bob. They are all together now. Sending my love, Breezy.
