Joel Barlow Obituary
Joel is preceded in death by his mother Lucille Kinney Barlow, his father Everett Pratt Barlow, his brother Fredric Lee Barlow, and infant son Benjamin Barlow.
He is deeply missed by his wife of 58 years Barbara Fergal Barlow; his son Peter B. Barlow (Rebeca); his brother-in-law James M. Fergal (Mary); his brothers Bruce A. Barlow (Karen), David E. Barlow (Ruthann), and Gregory S. Barlow (Margaret), and his sister Susanne Barlow Block as well as by his grandchildren Thomas Barlow and Chloe Barlow. They were the joy of his life. He is also survived by his son Mark S. Barlow, MD (Eileen) and granddaughters Madeleine Barlow and Katherine Barlow as well as by many nieces and nephews.
Joel retired in 2002 after nearly 30 years as a Professor of Chemical Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin. He was a lifelong student who was dedicated to learning and passing his knowledge on to his students. His academic research program led to 199 peer-reviewed and published papers as well as his being a consultant to industry and a technical expert in patent and other litigation. Joel held 19 patents. Electronics, coding, chemistry, 3D design, mechanics, CNC machines, 3D printers, and more were among Joel's interests.
He also had a fascination with things that flew, moved fast across water, or had interesting technology embedded. As "hobbies" he could be found taking flying lessons or designing and building radio-controlled airplanes, an automated hydroponics garden, radio-controlled boats - propeller and water jet-based speed boats - and many more.
It has been said that Joel was very often the smartest, kindest, and most interesting person in the room. He will be missed by many friends and colleagues.
A Celebration of Life will be held on July 13, 2024, starting at 11 am at the Milwaukee Yacht Club, Milwaukee, WI.
