Celeste Houston, 80, of Eufaula, Alabama, let go of her life on Wednesday, May 17, 2017, at her home on Country Club Road, about a mile from where she was born, trusting that God would take her where she needed to go.
Graveside services will be conducted by her nephew, Dr. J. Gorman Houston III, Sunday, May 21, 2017, at 5 P.M., at the Houston plot in Fairview Cemetery Addition, where Celeste's ashes will be interred next to her parents. Chapman Funeral Home of Eufaula directing. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the First United Methodist Church of Eufaula Building Fund or to the Eufaula High School Memorial Fund.
Celeste was born on Easter Sunday, March 28, 1937, at Britt's Infirmary on College Hill in Eufaula, Alabama. She was predeceased by her parents, James Gorman Houston and Mildred Vance Houston and her aunt and namesake, Celeste Vance Moncure. Celeste attended the public schools in Eufaula. She attained a B.S. from the University of Alabama and a Master's Degree from Auburn University. She was a member of Kappa Delta, as was her mother, sister-in-law, three nieces and two great nieces. Celeste taught in the public schools in Huntsville, Alabama, Pensacola, Florida and Columbus, Georgia. She was Guidance Counselor for the Eufaula High School and the Sanford Street Elementary School in Eufaula for many years and loved and was loved by her students. After retiring, Celeste enjoyed her family, friends, tennis, Bridge, cigarettes and Old Forrester. She had a great sense of humor and after being shown the foregoing sentence her reply was "not necessarily in that order".
Celeste is survived by her brothers, J. Gorman (Martha) Houston Jr. and Billy Vance (Toni) Houston; her nieces and nephew, Mildred V. Houston, Marie H. Anderson, Claire H. Wall, Caty H. Richardson and J. Gorman Houston III.
