Daniel Sobasky Obituary

Daniel Jerome Sobasky
January 4, 1929 - April 12, 2021
Columbus, Georgia - Daniel Jerome Sobasky, 92, of Columbus, Georgia passed away on Monday, April 12, 2021. Mr. Sobasky was born January 4, 1929 in St. Paul, Minnesota to the late John and Lottie Sobasky. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Lorraine Violet Sobasky, a son, Gary Daniel Sobasky, daughter-in-law, Marie Carroll Sobasky, granddaughter, Tabitha Denise Grantham, brother Tom Sobasky and sisters, June Jones and Virginia Churchill.
Daniel will go down in history in legendary status. A devoted husband for 72 years, his love for her is a story in and of itself. Patriarch to the Sobasky family, his booming voice filled our lives with instructions on how to do something better - like taping together a laundry basket with duct tape to keep it usable, using black tar to hold things together, or one of his many stories like when he taught his pet bear how to box in Japan while serving in the military, could hold your attention long enough for the next story to follow right after. Awarded and recognized for his achievements as a highly decorated veteran and a championship boxer, he was our Captain America. His ability to fight the odds through sheer will and determination made one think he would live forever.
Mr. Sobasky served his Country in the United States Army, he was a veteran of World War II, the Korean War and Vietnam, and he did 5 tours overseas and had numerous decorations and awards during his career. As a member of the United States Army for 20 years he was a master parachutist, glide-man, pathfinder- where he received a combat infantryman badge. He helped start the Pathfinder School in Ft Benning where he returned as an instructor. He also served as an airborne instructor. He served with the 11th Airborne Division, 320th Airborne Field Artillery Battalion (508th ARCT), 3rd and 7th Infantry Division, 82nd Airborne Division, 23rd American Division. He was a Member of the VFW and American Legion where he enjoyed playing Bingo. After retiring from the Army, he worked 16 years for WC Bradley in production where he later retired. In his free time he loved watching western shows so his family purchased him a cowboy hat and stuffed horse this past Christmas and officially named him "Rowdy Dan" and he chose the name "Buckshot" for his horse.
Mr. Sobasky is survived by his children, Patricia Sobasky Grantham (Richard), Mark Dean Sobasky, John Stephen Sobasky and Barry Lee Sobasky, and a sister, Sharon Valley, sisters-in-laws, Carolyn Morris Robertson, Betty Morris and Mary Sobasky, and a brother-in-law, Roy Jones.
Grandchildren, Richard Dale Grantham, Jr., Angela Grantham Griffin (Wayne), Shawna Sobasky Cheves (Will), Samantha Christian Sobasky, Barry Lee Sobasky, Jr. (Heather) John Daniel Sobasky and Michael David Sobasky (Ashley).
Great grandchildren, Jacob Strickland Cheves, Halleigh Mackenzie Woods, William Chandler Cheves, Hannah Madison Woods, Maxwell Landon Cheves and Michael Jonas Sobasky.
The family will receive friends on Friday, April 16, 2021 at 1:00pm, in Striffler-Hamby Mortuary 4071 Macon Road Columbus, Georgia. Graveside services for family and friends will follow at 2:00pm, in Parkhill Cemetery on Friday, April 16, 2021.
