Earle Hyman Obituary

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Earle Hyman, a veteran actor of stage and screen who was widely known for playing Russell Huxtable on "The Cosby Show," has died.

Jordan Strohl, a representative for The Actors Fund, says that Hyman died Friday at the Lillian Booth Actors Home in Englewood, New Jersey. He was 91.

A North Carolina native, Hyman made his Broadway debut as a teenager in 1943. He would go on to become a charter member of the American Shakespeare Theater. In 1980 Hyman received a Tony nomination for “The Lady From Dubuque."

Hyman is best known, however, for "The Cosby Show" where he played the father to Bill Cosby's Cliff Huxtable, even though he was only 11 years his senior. He earned a guest performer Emmy nomination for the role in 1986.

I had the pleasure of speaking with Mr. Hyman when he was a guest speaker at the New School's Theater Series during the 1990's.

Unlike most actors who quickly walked off the stage after the hour-long discussion, Mr. Hyman stayed after the interview to speak with members of the audience and shake their hands. Although he was a well-known actor to most Americans from The Cosby Show and a highly respected actor in Norway and Broadway, he came across as a very sincere and humble man....gracious with his time, willing to talk to fans, and always the consummate gentleman.

Thank you, Mr. Hyman, for your contribution to the world of theater and television. You will always be remembered in the hearts of so many!

To the family I hope your mourning soon be overshadowed with hope and strength giving joy. Matthews reminded us, "happy are those who mourn, since they will be comforted,"- Matthews 5:3

There are no words that anyone could say at this time, yet we are mourning the passing of a great actor Earle Hyman who played Grandpa Russell Huxtable on the Cosby show. I do remember watching the Cosby show every Thursday night in the 80's, one episode that i like is when they throw an anniversary party for Cliff's Parents and which they did a special musical tribute for grandma & grandpa along with a painting, Cliff & Clara give them an open cruise tickets for them to go on a cruise. He will be missed and not forgotten. Thanks for the memories that you give to us, the laughter to. We all know he is in a good place now, the angels are watching over him. My prayers are with his family.
