Elliot Rothschild Obituary

Elliot Julius Rothschild November 21, 1941- April 29, 2006 PHILADELPHIA, PA— Elliot Julius Rothschild passed away at his home in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on April 29, 2006, following a long, courageous and inspiring battle with the cancer that took his life. He worked every day, as a practicing architect, until shortly before his death and continued to maintain his characteristic cheerful good humor, and perceptiveness, until the day he died. The funeral will be at Temple Israel, 1617 Wildwood Avenue, Columbus, Georgia at 4 oÕclock p.m. on Tuesday, May 2, 2006. Rabbi Thomas J. Friedmann of Temple Israel will officiate. Mr. Rothschild will be buried in a private interment and the funeral will conclude at the cemetery. Mr. Rothschild, known simply as Elliot to one and all, was born in Columbus, Georgia on November 21, 1941, the second child of Maurice Dorn Rothschild and Elsie Julius Rothschild, both natives of Columbus. Elliot was educated in the Columbus public schools through the completion of his junior year at Columbus High School, where he played football and was an All Bi-City lineman. He completed his high school education at Valley Forge Military Academy in Wayne, Pennsylvania, graduating in 1960. Elliot then attended Princeton University, where he was captain of the freshman football team, a varsity football player, and a member of the Charter Club, graduating in 1965 with a Bachelor of Arts in Architecture. Following graduation from Princeton, Elliot attended Georgia Tech for three years, being graduated in 1968 with a Bachelor of Science in Architecture, and with a Master of Science in Industrial Management. Upon graduation from Georgia Tech, Elliot, who had originally been commissioned as a Field Artillery officer in the United States Army Reserve, was called to active duty as a Lieutenant in the Army Corps of Engineers. He served a long and hazardous tour in Vietnam during which he received several decorations and a number of commendations. Following his separation from active duty, he commenced the practice of architecture in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1971, while continuing as an Engineer officer in the United States Army Reserve. In Philadelphia, he also pursued and obtained the degree of Master of Fine Arts, a graduate architectural degree, from the University of Pennsylvania. During his 35 years of active architecture practice in Philadelphia, ElliotÕs experience and talent in the architectural field of adaptive re-use was recognized by his peers in scholarly journals, and through numerous professional accolades and awards. Elliot was preceded in death only by his parents, Maurice Dorn Rothschild, who died June 13, 1954, and Elsie Julius Rothschild, who died February 4, 1983. He is survived by his loving wife, Sandra J. Rothschild; and by his loving son and daughter-in-law, Wilson H. and Iryna Rothschild; and by his loving daughter and son-in-law, Stephanie Rothschild Yost and Patrick Yost; and by his loving daughter and son-in-law, Sandra Rothschild McCabe and Michael McCabe; and by his loving daughter, Karen E. Rothschild. Elliot was also blessed with his surviving grandchildren, Nathan David Rothschild; Rebekah, Andrew and Jacob Yost; and Owen McCabe. He is further survived by his only brother, Jerome M. Rothschild, of Columbus, Georgia, and a loving sister-in-law, Constance Koone Rothschild; and by two loving nephews, Jerome M. Rothschild, Jr. of Savannah, Georgia and Andrew A. Rothschild of Columbus, Georgia; and by a great-nephew and great-niece, Graham B. Rothschild and Eleanor A. Rothschild, of Savannah, as well as by loving cousins too numerous to mention. While those who wish may send flowers to Temple Israel, in lieu of flowers donations may be made to the RabbiÕs Discretionary Fund of Temple Israel, Columbus, Georgia.

Dear family and friends of Elliot
I had come to know Elliot through the course of work. In a very short time I was very impressed with his philosophy on life and his sense of integrity. I was deeply touched by Elliot's approach to his fate. The grace with which he accepted his situation should be taken by all as a valuable lesson in life. In the short time I knew him, I never saw anything but a smile on his face and a warm, friendly disposition. It was truly my privilege to make his acquaintance. Thank-you for this opportunity to pay tribute to Elliot. My most sincere regards to all who mourn his passing.

I'm sure you are all are as saddened as I to hear the news of Elliot's passing. I can't remember ever having met someone who faced such a daunting personal challenge so gracefully and absent of mallice. Those of you who knew him over the years saw Elliot rebound from a number of set backs. I'm very thankful that I got to see a man that woke up every morning with a tremendous burden and chose to reveal only a friendly smile and pleasant disposition.

warm regards,

Jackie and Bud Romasky
