Jerry was a sweet, hardworking man. I worked with him in Columbus several years ago. When I came there as metro editor in 2002, he made me feel so welcomed. He had a good heart and lots of integrity ... and always a smile. I know the newsroom there will miss him greatly. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones.

I went to College with Jerry and we are Fraternity Brothers. I remember he and I took a "rode trip" together (to AAMU) back then and we had loads of fun. I also remember seeing him in the library a lot back in those days. You could tell he was a winner.
I went to the funeral today......a nice tribute for a great guy and a good friend.

I was a member, with Jerry, of the 1975 graduating class at Munford HS. I was a cheerleader during the time Jerry played football at Munford. We all had a lot of fun together and our class was very close-knit. I considered him a friend and a true gentleman. I am so sorry for your loss and ours. I hadn't seen Jerry in years but I still fill the void that he has left. The world is missing a sweet spirit. Save a place for us at the supper table, Jerry. See you again soon.

Jerry and myself and the current sports editor of The Anniston Star Bran Strickland were members of one of the world's most exclusive clubs -- sports writers who came from small, small Munford High School in Munford, Ala. We would always smile and laugh and joke about that and how we all went on to work as sport writers at The Anniston Star. I will miss that very, very much and arriving at our GSFL draft every year to find that Jerry always seemed to be the first one there with his smiling face keeping Mike Fincher company until the rest of us straggled in. I will miss that, too. Now that he's gone, there's a huge, huge hole in the club, the GSFL ... and the world. Thanks for the memories, good man, thanks for the memories!

I worked with Jerry on the Phenix City beat for a year and he taught me so much. Although we worked for "competing" newspapers, me for the Citizen and he for the Ledger, I always considered him a friend. He was the type of person who didn't half-way do anything. He was so good at what he did and you just couldn't get things past him. I looked up to Jerry.
I ran into him about two weeks ago when we both covered a player scholarship signing at Smiths Station. I showed up a minute or two late and was in such a hurry that I left my pen in the car. I turned to Jerry and didn't even have to ask him - he offered me his so I could write down the names of the kid's family members. He didn't think twice; that's the type of guy he was.
It was a pleasure and a blessing knowing this man and I am a better person and reporter because of the time, although limited, I was able to spend working with him. God Bless his family, for he is in a better place now.

Jerry and I have been friends now for well over 10 years. I don't think a lot of people knew that he really had a good voice. I had the privilege of coaching him vocally during the summer of 2007. I even videotaped him live onstage singing a song we had been working on. I will miss him terribly. My condolences to Carolyn and the family. I love you guys!
