Dr. Joseph David
Stein
May 23, 1930 -
February 24, 2018
Tampa, FL- Dr. Joseph David Stein, esteemed Anesthesiologist in the Columbus, GA community, died peacefully on February 24, 2018 in Tampa, FL. He was 87 years old. The son of Joseph H. Stein and Ella Mae (Helms) Stein, he was born in Neenah, WI on May 23, 1930 and attended local schools in Clintonville, WI, graduating from Clintonville High School. He received a B.S. from the University of Wisconsin and subsequently graduated from the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine in 1958. After a year of internship in Stephen's Point, WI, he moved to Atlanta, GA and completed his residency in Anesthesiology at Emory University. Following residency, he relocated to Columbus, GA where he founded the Anesthesia Associates of Columbus. He retired from the practice of Anesthesiology in 1995 and became an avid and successful stock investor. His colleagues described him as a brilliant mentor and "one of a kind". Dr. Stein felt privileged to serve his community as a physician. His friends and family enjoyed his dry, yet playful sense of humor. He never lost his enthusiasm for Wisconsin Badger football and was always a fierce advocate for his daughters.
Dr. Stein was preceded in death by Katherine Marie (Prunty) Stein, his wife of 54 years. He is survived by three daughters: Dr. Stephanie Gardner and her husband, Michael Young, of Johns Creek, GA; Dr. Stacy Gryboski and her husband, Bill of Atlanta, GA; and Dr. Shelly Stein and her husband, Mark Bynum of Oldsmar, FL; six grandchildren: Andrew, Adam, and Abby Gardner, Kate and Daisy Gryboski, and Markus Bynum; one sister, Joan Stein Berman (Julian) of Glencoe, IL and their children Andy Berman (Pam Kaul), Liz Coney (Jeff) and Tom Berman (Lee). Dr. Stein has been cremated and his ashes will be buried along side his wife in Columbus, GA in a private family ceremony. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Four Wheel Drive Foundation & Museum, P.O. Box 104, Clintonville, WI 54929.
