Dearest Butts Family,
It's so hard to believe that it's been six months since Carter's passing. I want you to know that the impression he left, and continues to leave, on my life and soul is great.
As I teach children everyday, I remember the memories and lessons I learned from Carter: love hard, love the Lord fully, walk accordingly, and continuously build relationships that will last. I've seen my students grow as young people since I've began modeling the behavior and mindset Carter lived. The boys are learning how to become 'gentlemen', the students are investing their lives in things and people bigger than themselves, and some students are even asking me about my religious beliefs. I praise God for Carter and the constant witness he lived before us all.
I want you to know how much he is missed and how much I daily think about him, whisper 'thank you' to he and Christ for the love they show me, and model the behavior he taught me. Everytime I open my laptop or cell phone, a picture of Carter and the 'good times' reminds me that a life lived without meaning and passion will be meaningless in the end. Carter used to tell me to rest in reason and move in passion just as the Lord does. Please know that because of the life your son lead in Christ, I daily try to rest in reason and move in passion. I love him and I miss him greatly. But I find peace and excitement in the fact that one day I will see him again in front of the God that we serve and we all will rejoice as God tells us all, "Well done, my good and faithful servants."
I continually pray for you as a family. I pray that your heart finds a little peace in the fact that Carter's life touches me daily. I am truly changed because of his witness, and I am eternally grateful. I love you Butts family.

Dear Randy, Rachel, Rebecca and Captain,
I think of you everyday and pray to God that you will have the strength to keep going. I just can't express how changed I feel since Carter's funeral. I have always known he was special in every way as I watched him grow into a wonderful man. I just never knew what an impact he had on so many people. I know he is with you as you try to move forward. I can still see and hear him singing that Stevie Wonder song "I just Called to Say I Love You" when he was little. I just want to say I love all of you and wanted you to know how much I am praying for you every day. I am always here for you if you need me.
Love,

Randy and Rachel,
I cannot express how so very sorry I am to hear of Carter's death. As a parent, I can only imagine how devastating it must be to lose a child. It's clear from everyone who knew him that the beautiful, dimpled faced baby I remember grew up to be an incredible young man who touched everyone he knew. I'm sorry I didn't have the opportunity to know him as an adult. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

To Carter's Family,
I knew Carter by way of his friend Molly. Over the years of Molly's & my friendship I have been floored by intesity of Carter's love for his friends. His passion for life and his ingenuity and thoughtfulness gifted him with so many unique qualities through which he demonstrated his love for family & friends. I have been mostly an onlooker for much of this, but even in the glimpses and brief times I spent with Carter and Molly and the rest of 'the boys' my heart has been blessed & challenged & encouraged by him. I am praying for your family often.

The first time I met Carter was at his Brookstone High School graduation. He was the graduation speaker for his senior class. I'd heard what an incredible guy Carter was, and his speech that night confirmed what I'd heard. Carter's remarks were both humorous and thoughtprovoking. He remembered his parents, his sister, and grandparents, his classmates and teachers. Carter was a great student. Carter also was a great athelete, and became a nationally ranked triathlete. What a loss to all of us for Carter to be called home at such an early age, when we all least expected it and when we all looked forward to many more years with this incredibly gifted young man. Rachel and Randy, you raised an awesome young man, who blessed not only you and his family but everyone who knew him. Perhaps he was an angel as one person said in Lumpkin the day we celebrated Carter's life. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

On this cold morning I prayed that the Lord would wrap His arms around the hearts of the Butts Family, that he would send warmth to sooth the aching hearts. I prayed that he would send a smile to someone's face in the midst of sorrow, thinking of God's new architect. Butts Family you are not being forgotten. You are always in my prayers.

Our condolences, thoughts, and prayers are with you and your family. Those of us at St. Paul's have been given so much from Carter. He was generous with his time and talents. Whether helping with designs for our new church or just painting, cleaning, doing yardwork; he served cheerfully and diligently. His prayer requests for others displayed his concern and compassion for them. You raised a wonderful son and I know God is pleased with him. As we remodel our church, we will always benefit from Carter's contributions. His impact has and will always be felt by our community.

Dear Rebecca and family,
I am heart broken over this tremendous loss. Growing up with Carter was a blessing and wonderful experience. Our entire class had the utmost respect and admiration for him. He was ALWAYS so pleasant and smiling. Not one day in 14 years at Brookstone school did I ever see Carter in a bad mood, and that is truly magical and inspiring! He lived more and accomplished more in 26 years than most people can in a 70+ year life span. I admire Carter and always will look up to him. His life touched MANY. Our loss is heaven's gain, and I KNOW SINCERELY that Carter has that big, gorgeous smile right now watching us all from heaven! He is in an amazing place in God's arms, and it is a complete relief to know that we will all see him again! Just know that he is smiling down on his family right now! God bless you ALL!

Carter,
Thank you for teaching me how to live life, inspiring me to see the beauty of each breath by sitting still long enough to watch the sun rise. Thank you for always having an eraser handy for me to get rid of my self-imposed boundaries. And, thank you for your profound wisdom, delivered simply and subtly so that the message was never lost.
You have given me an awesome blueprint, and left me with the tools to build a brilliant future. I cannot wait to see what God’s plan has in store for me.
I love you so much. (And I will always be your Beyonce!)

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Butts, Rebecca, and family,
It was an absolute shock to hear the news. We're so sorry. We will forever miss Carter- especially that smile. We feel blessed that we were able to catch up, dance, and laugh with him on Saturday night. It's so sad that such a joyful evening had such a tragic outcome, but we'll think a happy thought to celebrate Carter each year on our anniversary. We can't wait to hug you all when we get home.

To Carter's family: you are in my constant thoughts and prayers. Everyone who knew Carter was touched by him and is better for knowing him. I was fortunate to meet him my freshman year of college, and he was actually my first date to a football game. He was always a gentleman and someone who will never be forgotten. I hope your memories of him, as well as knowing he's with Jesus now, will help get you through this. You're in my thoughts and prayers. Laura

Randy, Rachel, Rebecca, and the rest of the Butts family my heart goes out to you and your loss. Carter was a blessing to everyone he came in contact with. I am so lucky and so blessed to be one of his friends. I hold my memories dear. I love him and miss him so much. He pushed me to greatness. I only have beautiful memories of his life and the time I spent with him. We constantly talked about how much he loved each of you and how much you influenced him. Please know that he inspired me to a level beyond the limits of words. He consistently dwelled in the possibility of what could be. We always talked about sitting around the table when we got older in 'designer chase lounges.' :) He told me he would have a huge problem with me and my dancing ability if his kids didn't know how to dance. :) He will be truly missed. Know that I pray for each of you daily. Know that he is in heaven with the King and one day we will see him again. [and we'll all sit in golden designer chase lounges].:) Love you all,

My family and I are saddened to hear about the death of Carter. What a tremendous lost to everyone who has ever know him. As a student, Carter was exceptional. As a person he was kind, respectful, considerate, and everything a parent should be proud of, even in middle school. One never knows what God has in mind, but be comforted by the fact that in his too short life, Carter touched more people then most and we are all better for having known him. Know that although he is no longer with you in body, he will never be gone. You and your family are in our thoughts and prayers.

Randy, Rachel, Rebecca, Cap and the rest of the family,
It was a saturnine Sunday, October 21, 2006. The community of Lumpkin and the surrounding area fell to its' knees after hearing of this tragic loss. We want you to know that your loss, while much greater than ours, is ours as well. For Carter was family to everyone here. By his kind words and deeds, he was a true discipline of our Lord and a friend to everyone that knew him. Leisha and I continue to pray for your strength to face this tragedy. We know that it can only be a day by day process.
If there is anything we can do to help with soothing the pain at any time, please feel free to call on us.
Your good friends and father n law and mother n law,

Mr and Mrs Butts and Bekka, your son and brother was a very dear friend of our daughter, Edie Kavanaugh. Carter visited us here at the beach a couple of years ago to compete in a race. My husband and I immediately felt the warmth and passion of such a wonderful young gentleman. It breaks our hearts that Carter has left all of us - it seems to me that a gentle spirit is missing in the air each day. Carter is a Christian and I know the Lord has a better plan for him. I know him well enough to know that he would want us all to be strong and live each day for the Lord and for all that is good in this world. My deepest sympathy is with each of you. May the peace of God fill your heart with Carter's love for you.
