Virginia Nicholson Obituary

Virginia Williams Nicholson April 24, 1921- December 12, 2006 CHAPEL HILL, NC— Virginia Williams Nicholson, devoted mother and local political activist, died on December 12 at Carolina Meadows in Chapel Hill. She was born in Hamilton, Georgia, April 24, 1921 and was raised there before attending college at Agnes Scott College in Decatur, Georgia. After graduation she worked for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. While in Atlanta she met her husband, George Edward Nicholson, Jr. of Montclair, NJ. They moved to Chapel Hill where her husband completed his PhD work in Mathematical Statistics before assuming the Chairmanship of the Mathematical Statistics Department, a position he held until his death in 1971. Mrs. Nicholson was active in local politics serving as Orange County Democratic Campaign Manager for the John Kennedy/Terry Sanford campaign in 1960. She had four children: three sons and a daughter. Her daughter, Molly Ellen Nicholson, died in 1968. She is survived by a son, George E. Nicholson, III of Arlington, VA, a son Britain W. Nicholson, a daughter-in-law Celeste Robb-Nicholson, and grand-daughters, Molly Celeste Nicholson, Ellen Colton Nicholson, Laura Bradford Nicholson, and Rachel Walton Nicholson all of Auburndale, MA and a son, Patrick Kolb Nicholson, a daughter-in-law Donna Fiorelli Nicholson, and a grand-daughter Virginia Louise Nicholson of Wilmington, Delaware. A service will be held at 1:30 pm on January 20th, 2006 at the Hamilton Baptist Church. A graveside service will follow.
