Barbara Block Obituary

Barbara Block

Peterborough, NH - Barbara Jean (Peterson) Block, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on February 15, 2025, surrounded by loved ones, at the age of 94 in Queensbury, NY. Born on November 22, 1930, in Orange, NJ, she was the daughter of George Peterson and Grace Seelig-Peterson of Glen Rock, NJ. Barbara was the cherished wife of Roger O. Block for over 67 years.

Barbara is survived by her loving husband, Roger, and their two children: son Glenn R. Block and his wife Kristin, and their daughter, Abigail, from Merrimack, NH; and daughter Sharon Raesly and her husband Jim, along with their children Holly and Harrison, from Queensbury, NY. Barbara was predeceased by her beloved grandson Christopher G. Block.

Barbara graduated from Ridgewood High School in NJ and earned a bachelor's degree in biology from Western College in 1951. A lifelong learner, Barbara's intellectual curiosity and love for science shaped her throughout her life. She and Roger enjoyed many trips down to the Caribbean Islands and lived as "snowbirds" for a short time in Englewood, FL.

Barbara was an active member of her community, deeply involved in her church life. She was a part of the Peterborough Union Congregational Church Women's Auxiliary, a member of the church choir. She was a volunteer at the church library, and she also enjoyed square dancing. Her love for music and her community were central to her life, and she made many lasting friendships through her involvement.

An avid sports fan, Barbara had a passion for the Boston Bruins, following them faithfully for nearly 70 years. Over the years, she had the privilege of meeting many of "the greats" from the team such as Bobby Orr, Terry O'Reilly, and Zdeno Chara. Barbara also loved the New England Patriots, proudly cheering for them through their victories and challenges. Outside of sports, Barbara had a creative spirit, enjoying square dancing, knitting, cross-stitching, and crocheting baby blankets for new mothers. She did some of her best work while cheering on the Bruins and Patriots. Her crafts were a way to express her love and care for others.

Barbara also had a professional career, working for Yankee Magazine, 73 Magazine, and Horse of Course Magazine where she made many friends and colleagues who remember her fondly.

Though she was tiny in stature, she was mighty in mind and energy and even danced at her granddaughter's wedding this past September at age 94.

A private memorial service will be held in in Peterborough, NH, where Barbara and Roger lived for most of their lives.

Barbara's family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made online to the American Diabetes Association. Please leave your thoughts or a memorable story at: https://www.sbfuneralhome.com/obituaries/Barbara-Jean-Peterson-Block?obId=41933444

Barbara's warmth, kindness, sharp mind, and enthusiasm for life will be deeply missed by all who knew her. Her legacy of love for family, friends, and her community will live on in the hearts of those who were lucky enough to know her.
