Ferris Urbanowski Obituary

- Ferris Buck Urbanowski, longtime resident of New Ipswich, died peacefully at her home in Vermont, March 29, after a brief illness. She was buried at the family home in a simple service, as she had requested. She was 78.

Ferris is well-known to many in the Peterborough area for her work as a psychotherapist and a meditation teacher. Her career in the healing professions spanned nearly 60 years.

An early student of the Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh, she was among the first practitioners of mindfulness meditation in the US, working for years at the Center for Mindfulness, U. Mass Medical School with Jon Kabat-Zinn. She taught at many spiritual centers, universities and professional organizations here and abroad.

She first came to New Ipswich in the 1970s, and built a home off the grid at Wildcat Hill. One of her great joys was the wild and simple life there; she had a wide and deep relationship with the community and the land. In 2000 she moved to Vermont to be closer to her parents - Bob and Jean Buck. Following a series of tumors over the past decade which resulted in blindness, she continued to teach and meditate with friends and spend much of her time with family.

She is survived by her brother, Robert Buck of Waterbury, VT; daughters Alexandra and Tasha, their spouses John and Steve; and granddaughters, Beatrice and Millicent.

In lieu of gifts donations may be made to Mad River Valley Ambulance Service or Vermont Public Radio.

Ferris taught mindfulness psychotherapy at Antioch University when I attended there in 1991. She had an amazing presence about her. I was going through a difficult time and just being around her and that warm, wonderful, smile made a huge difference for me. I now have a private practice after a 30 year career in Community Mental Health. Mindfulness is the foundation of my practice and I will forever be grateful for the influence Ferris had in my life and career.

Many memories, sharing breaking of bread in Peterborough as we were both psychotherapist, ideas, love and her amazing practice. Also memories of her home in Vt, our trip to Peru and the Amazon.an amazing journey. I would love to hear from Alex and Tasha....yes Ferris's spirit flows thru us. even with me here in Charlottesville Va. I still miss her.

Ferris's heart felt laughter will always be with me. Her beautiful daughters and grand babies my hand is extended with love that radiates from Ferris. Our times at Wildcat, Peterborough lunches, Peru- our mutual laughter at our fear of those big Amazon snakes, her home on the beautiful hillside of Vermont and of course the farmers market. Her wisdom, love and beauty will be with me as I plant more flowers here in Charlottesville. Oh yes our laughter at touring Montecello when she stayed with us -we were graced with her presences, hoped for warm April weather: it snowed: we laughed. with love, sydna julian

A photo of Ferris hangs over my meditation altar. Every morning I talk to her and hear her throaty laugh so clearly. She’s still supporting me with so much love. I hope I’m doing the same for her.

Dear Tasha and Alex, warmest sympathies to you both on the death of your mom. She was a beautiful person, who lit up the room - any room - with her presence. My mom, Li, loved spending time with her and working with her. I can't think of any other friend whom my mother responded to with comparable warmth. I'm returning to you, Alex, a photo of Ferris, you, and my mom, which I think conveys something of the joy they took in each other's company. With best wishes to you and your families, Peter.

My deepest condolences to Ferris's family. Ferris taught me to breathe and meditate over 30 years ago and continues to have a great positive influence on my spiritual life today. I was blessed to know her and value the wisdom and love that she shared. Our world needs more people like Ferris.
