Margaret S. Gurney

Dublin NH — Margaret S. Gurney of Dublin, New Hampshire died peacefully on Thursday, April 28, 2022, surrounded by her family.

Margaret was born in New York City on August 19, 1953. She was the daughter of Samuel Curtis Fisher and Aline Stump Fisher Cook. Following Samuel's death, Aline married Charles T. Cook, who became Margaret's stepfather. She is survived by her husband Bill, sons Henry and Charlie and their wives Julia and Sarah as well as her siblings Tracy Wagoner and J. Yancey Brame and many nieces and nephews.

Margaret attended Chapin School in New York City and The Masters School at Dobbs Ferry. She was a member of the first class of women to attend Kenyon College and graduated from Keene State College with a degree in journalism. Over the years, she worked as an editor for several publications including Byte Magazine and SETIQuest. Margaret served as Editor of the Dublin Advocate for ten years and volunteered her services to many local non-profit organizations such as the Dublin Community Church and Brantwood Camp.

Margaret's true passions were yoga and gardening. In 2010, she completed yoga teacher certification at Kripalu in Stockbridge, Massachusetts. She practiced and taught yoga for many years and was part of a strong local community of yoga enthusiasts. Margaret could often be found working in her ever-evolving garden and happily sharing her creativity with friends and family.

A memorial service is scheduled for the Dublin Community Church on May 28, 2022, at 3:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, her friends may make a donation to the Dublin Community Church, Brantwood Camp, Community Volunteer Transportation Company (CVTC) or a charity of their choice.

Bill, Charlie, Henry, I just found out today, July 17, 2023. Margaret was my next-door neighbor, friend, and believed in me when I went through the toughest time in my life. I was glad to know her, and all of you, glad that my son Chris, and Henry shared many happy childhood memories together, playing together and laughing so hard as silly hearts. Margaret and I made meals for one another, when our second children were born, Charlie, and Priscilla, I wish we kept in touch more. Hugs to you all for your great and profound loss. X O. Margaret was one of the first people we met after moving to Dublin in 1993. Her son, Charlie, was a friendly, blond-haired boy attending Cobb Meadow School when our daughter Abby started there for preschool/kindergarten. Margaret's knowledge of and love for Dublin was very special. Over the years, she helped so many people feel welcomed when they moved to the area. Through her work for town committees, the DubHub, the Dublin Advocate, and other pursuits, she made an amazing difference in everything she did. She was very accomplished, yet also genuinely modest and self-effacing. She is missed every day by so many friends who at least have the comfort of knowing that her legacy carries on in her family and in many wonderful memories and accomplishments. love, Susan and Steven

When my young family moved to Peterborough almost 20 years ago, I worked with Margaret as a colleague and turned to her for editing help at a couple of different magazine jobs. Aside from her professional talent, however, I also discovered her to be a font of valuable local intelligence. I asked her about daycare for my kids, the schools and teachers, best places to shop for food, hardware, who we could rely on for honest service, even who to take my car repairs to. It got so that when my wife and I had a question about something, Laura would tell me to go "ask The Source" and eventually when I thought I knew Margaret well enough to tell her what our code was for her, she laughed. Margaret was also a fierce survivor, had a strong spirit, was very proud of her sons, and loved Bill completely. I know this from the many conversations we had about family as we worked side by side. It's my loss that I didn't seek Margaret out over the last handful of years, and for that I am sorry. She will be greatly missed by many, and I hope that knowing that will bring some measure of comfort to her family.
