Susan McMullan
Temple, NH - Susan Ware Senkler McMullan, 82, formerly of Carlisle, MA, Temple, NH and Southern Pines, NC died on January 2, 2024 after a long illness. At her side was her husband of 52 years, Joseph C. McMullan, her dog, Cookie, and her cat, Rocky.
Born on June 3, 1941 in South Bend, Indiana, Susie was the daughter of the late Albert Easton Senkler and Susan Locke Senkler Smith. After her father's untimely death from a long illness in 1947, her mother with Susie and her two siblings, George and Abigail, moved to Concord, MA to be near her maternal grandparents. Susie's mother subsequently married Farnham Smith a widower with two daughters, Susan and Lydia. After graduation from Concord Academy in 1959, Susie attended Colby College in Waterville, ME graduating in 1963 with a bachelor's degree in political science.
Susie and Joe met in 1969 on Joe's first trip to Carlisle when he stopped to ask an attractive redhead on horseback for directions. Little did they know those directions would eventually lead to their marriage on June 26, 1971. To know Susie was to know she loved animals, horseback riding, travel, golf, and reading. Horseback riding was a lifelong addiction, ending only when the combined age of horse and rider exceeded 100 years! Susie was an avid fox hunter with Nashoba Valley Hunt. She competed regularly and successfully in three-day events with her horses Pity Me, Willy, and JD. In keeping with Susie's generous nature, she shared her knowledge of horses as a long term 4H leader. In addition to horses, Susie and Joe almost always had two dogs, usually Dalmatians. The dogs would accompany Susie when out riding her horses. Susie continued to have a least one dog at her side throughout her life. Golf came later in life and again Susie's athleticism enabled her to become a very good player. Her favorite courses were Ardglass in Northern Ireland and Bandon Dunes in Oregon. Susie loved to read all genres of books except science fiction and if there was a book club in the area, Susie joined it. Her favorite TV series included the BBC production of Pride & Prejudice, which she just about had memorized, as well as Downton Abbey. Two of her other favorite activities were creating clay pottery and volunteering at the local food pantry. Susie and Joe were fortunate to travel extensively throughout the United States, Canada, Western and Eastern Europe, South America, the Far East, Australia, and New Zealand. Having been a travel consultant for an exclusive group of clients, Susie did all of the detailed planning for their own personal trips. Favorite haunts such as Ireland, Scotland, England's Lake District, and France were visited multiple times.
Susie was very personable with a quick wit. She was well-loved and made friends easily. In short, Susie enjoyed a life well lived.
Susie is survived by her husband, Joe, her sisters-in-law Brigitte Senkler, Maureen Wood and Nicoletta McMullan, her brothers-in-law Ernest McMullan, Bernard McMullan, Sam Stephens and Richard Nader, and numerous nieces and nephews of multiple generations. Susie is predeceased by her brother George E. Senkler II, her sister Abigail D. Kazanowski, her stepsisters Susan Huebsch and Lydia Nader, and her parents.
The funeral service will be held at the Carlisle Congregational Church located in Carlisle, MA on January 25, 2024 at 11:30 am. The church service will be immediately followed by a graveside service at Green Cemetery also in Carlisle, MA. A reception will be held at Carlisle Congregational Church after the burial.
