Abel de Nobrega Mendes

Johnson City - Abel de Nobrega Mendes, 76, passed away on July 30, 2025, in Binghamton, New York. Born on March 26, 1949, on Madeira Island, Portugal, Abel lived a life marked by service, dedication, and a deep love for the sea.

Abel proudly served his country as a Staff Sergeant in the First Air Cavalry Recon Division during the Vietnam War. A two-tour veteran, he carried with him the strength and resilience forged in those years of service throughout his life.

Following his military career, Abel embarked on a professional journey that began with Savin in Boston, Massachusetts. His work with the company brought him to Johnson City, New York. Eventually, he transitioned into a successful career in insurance sales with The Bayridge Group/NFP.

Throughout his working years, Abel was known for his commitment and adaptability.

Abel found great joy in the natural world. He had a lifelong passion for fishing and cherished time spent on the ocean-especially along the shores of Cape Cod and Plymouth. Whether casting a line or simply enjoying the rhythm of the waves, these coastal retreats were among his most treasured places. He also enjoyed golf and spending time with his American Legion family of the Chester J. Jaskiewicz Post 1305.

He was always the life of the party wherever he went and is lovingly remembered by his daughters Thorn Mendes, Lisamarie O'Brien, and Jennifer Baggerman; and by his granddaughter Brynn Hempstead. Abel was predeceased by his father Abel Mendes Sr., mother Julia Mendes, and brother John Mendes.

May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him and serve as a lasting tribute to a life well lived.
