Our loving father, Dr. Aiyasami Jayaraman, passed away on April 1st, 2022 in Phoenix , Arizona USA at the age of 95. He was surrounded by close family members. He was a brilliant physicist. His career started under the guidance of Sir C V Raman at the Raman Institute in Bangalore where he earned his PhD. In 1960, he emigrated to the US. He spent a few years in UCLA before joining Bell Labs in 1963. He had a productive scientific career at Bell Labs until his retirement in 1990. Dr. Jayaraman was a great lover and lifelong student of Carnatic Music. He and his wife hosted many legendary Carnatic musicians and other artists. He also was one of the pioneers in bringing these artists to the US through the Bharathi Society of New York. He was a gentle, kind and loving man who touched everyone that he met. My deepest respects to Professor Jayaraman. As a physicist of Indian origin I knew of his papers but never expected to meet him. And then in the early 1990s, as a young postdoc at Michigan State University, I was visiting IISc for a week or so at Chandan Dasgupta's invitation. And as luck would have it, one fine morning a very respectable gentleman was also in the building with me. It was Professor Jayaraman. It was such a privilege to interact with this giant in physics and someone who was such a treasured son of India. He was incredibly humble and kind. It was a delight to talk to him and be in his presence for a few days. This world is a better place because of his presence.

Dear Geetha and Chitra,

I just noticed that Uncle has passed away. I used to visit your parents often in New Jersey when I was a student in New York in the early eighties. They were always warm and hospitable and I remember having many discussions with your father. We continued to keep in touch after he retired from Bell Labs and my last conversation with him was a few years ago. He was a kind and gentle man who was always very encouraging. I will miss him very much. Please accept my condolences.

Hello Geetha and Chitra.. my father James knew your father from Raman Institute connection. We visited you all in the 1970s in New York or around there. Was just looking through my dad's stuff ..like his phone book and saw and remembered your names. My parents both passed away in 1990s. We immigrated to Canada in 60s and I still live near Toronto... My sympathies for your dad's passing..what an amazing life he lived.. you must be so proud...

I first met Dr. Jayaraman (AJ) in the late 1970's. He invited me to give a talk at the 1980 Gordon Conference on 'Research at High Pressure' that he co-chaired. I visited him later at the Bell Labs and spoke with him at many conferences. During a visit to Washington University in St Louis in the late 1980's he put in a good word for me. They then invited me to come from Munich, Germany for an interview. An offer followed. I joined the physics faculty there in 1990 until my retirement in 2018.

AJ was an exceptional scientist and wonderful human being. He will be greatly missed by the high-pressure community all over the world.

In deep sympathy,

Great loss for all of us. I am one of many inspired by him and caused me to work hard to achieve. I had few interactions with him at all stages in my life. Always within few minutes our conversations, our topic will deep dive into or about Sir C V Raman. His Guru Bakthi is so deep and amazing and I am fortunate to know him. May His Soul Rest at the feet of Lord Shiva.

I met A Jayaraman in 1963 when he came to Purdue at the invitation of AK Ramdas. Jayaraman stayed with us, a group of grad students at 303 W. stadium Ave. We met again in NY when I was a founder-student rep. at Bharathi Society and we met at music concerts . He and Kamala had me over at their home many times. After I returned to India, we met at NAL . Over the years we have been in touch.
I attach a poem in Sanskrit which I wrote on him on his 95th birthday . It summarises 59 years of our friendship. Please open the poem in a new tab. Here is the translation:
The opening words refers to two Ramas- one human (C.V.) and the other who came in the guise of a human. Next phrase recalls discussions with you which led to a deep understanding of music-be it a song like Dinamani vamsa or a raga like Madhava Manohari. Then I refer to your remarkable peacefulness. The fact you helped me to start a career in India with NAL comes next .I conclude by paying my heartfelt respects to you, You are characterised by proficiency in physical and spiritual knowledge

My deepest condolences. He was a stalwart of the Indian Academy of Sciences, an eloquent author, and a generous supporter of science. I did not know him for a long time, but we had a connection.

Jayaraman Mama was not only an eminent scientist, he was a lover of Carnatic music and an enthusiastic cook. I have pleasant memories of him playing the veena and patiently explaining the nuances of the raga - while we relished the badam barfi he had just made. He was a gentle, kind-hearted person who will be greatly missed by everyone. My namaskarams to a great soul. Ambi

What a Great Soul our Lord has spared for us to know and get acquainted with!
Yes, we are related to uncle and Kamala aunty through aunty's paternal lineage.
Uncle has visited us at Dallas. We had the fortune of hosting him and Kamala aunty then. "The words of wisdom don't come from mouth but through actions."--this sentence we don't forget as this was uttered by uncle during one of his conversations regarding "pursuit and perseverance" during that stay with us.

We fully understand as a family how you all will miss him. Please accept our condolences.

As a famous philosopher once mentioned, "Great souls are on a greater agenda and mission to better the humanity at large and eventually they reach the Almighty whom they are part of". Yes, the time has come for such a noble soul to merge with Supreme soul (para brahmam). Our humble obeyance to all of you. Let peace pervade and remain with all of you

This is a great loss to the High-pressure community. Prof. Jayaraman's two papers on diamond anvil cell techniques were highly useful reference papers on this topic; I recall meeting Prof. Jayaraman briefly in the Raman Research Institute, Bangalore, many years ago when he was visiting. He was simplicity personified. May his soul rest in peace.

I have known Prof. Jayaraman from 1990 when he came to IISc, Bangalore after retiring from Bell Labs. He was my mentor since then and I learnt from him high pressure research. Even when I had email correspondence this year, he seemed doing very well. He has treated me as family hence I call him Mama (maternal uncle). His passing away has left a void in our life. He loved people selflessly. A great human being. Wanting to know everyone's science and wellbeing. A great story teller in Science. We all will miss him. May his soul rest in peace. Our sincere condolences to his nearest and dearest. Om Shanti.

whil i was still a research scholar in France, i had a chance to meet dr Jayaraman in Groble ina conference; I showed him my print on YbTe(sent for publication but not in print); He asked me several questions on my data and asked me to give him a comy; Months later I was surprised to his paer citing my worksaying to be published; When my thesis director in PAris saw this he was totally suprised and said no one was ever cited from our lab by Bell LBas and said'Sury you will get your D.Sc degree' only then i realised the importance of my work and the kndness of Dr Jayaraman; He nedd not have cited my unpublished work but he wanted to give me credit. That was 1971 i htink, sine then i was in constant touch with him and alwys apprecited my work and encouraged me . I feel very sad to learn this news. Aum saanthi.

We are greatly saddened by the loss of Jayaraman Mama. He was a friend of my parents since 1949 and an integral part of our social and family life for my entire life. I was lucky to have been able to meet him and spend an evening with him before we all went into COVID lockdown and was lucky enough to speak to him just about 6 weeks ago. Our love to all of you.

I am deeply saddened by the passing of my much respected and admired brother-in-law, Dr.A. Jayaraman. He and my late sister, Kamala, were a wonderfully hospitable couple who welcomed and supported innumerable new comers to the United States. The legacy that he has left behind will be fondly remembered forever by all those of us who experienced the hospitality of the Jayaraman household. May his soul attain Atma Shanthi!
