Al Varela Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 10, 2025.
Al Varela, born on April 21, 1929, passed away peacefully on December 10, 2024, in Fresno, California, at the age of 95.

A proud veteran, Al honorably served his country as a member of the United States Marine Corps. Following his military service, he worked as a plasterer before founding his own construction company. Through his dedication and skill, Al completed numerous commercial projects throughout Fresno and across California. Later in his career, he focused on building custom homes in the Fresno area, leaving a lasting legacy through his craftsmanship and contributions to the community.

In 1974, Al and his beloved wife, Lupe, embarked on an entrepreneurial journey together by opening Speedy Zapatos. This venture reflected their shared determination and partnership, serving as a testament to their commitment to one another and their family.

Al was a devoted father to Albert and Barbara and cherished his role as a grandfather to Ally, Jaeger, Andrea, and Manuel. He also took immense pride in being a great-grandfather to Lana, Gavin, Genevieve, and Andrew. His family was the cornerstone of his life, and he treasured every moment spent with them.

He was predeceased by his wife Lupe and daughter Laura but leaves behind a legacy of love, resilience, and hard work that will be remembered by all who knew him.

Al's life was defined by his unwavering dedication to family, his strong work ethic, and his enduring sense of purpose. May his memory bring comfort to those who loved him and inspire others to live with the same strength and devotion.

A memorial will be held on January 17, 2025 at Fresno Memorial Gardens at 10am.

In the tapestry of life, certain threads stand out with unparalleled brilliance, and Al was undoubtedly one of those vibrant strands. For over five decades, I had the distinct honor of knowing and collaborating with him.

Al was not merely a builder of homes; he was a sculptor of dreams, transforming the humble into the extraordinary. Emerging from modest beginnings, he carved a path of resilience and determination, ultimately establishing his own company. Through his visionary leadership, he became one of the valley's most influential custom home builders, leaving an indelible mark on the landscape and in the hearts of those who had the privilege to work alongside him.

His generosity was boundless, extending beyond the walls of his creations. Al embodied honor in every interaction, treating colleagues and clients alike with respect and kindness. He understood that true success is measured not merely by achievements, but by the impact one has on the lives of others. It is individuals like Al who elevate the human experience, weaving connections that enrich our lives and communities.

Rest in peace, my good friend. Your journey may have concluded, but the echoes of your kindness will resonate in our hearts forever.

In October of 1973 my husband and I bought a house Al had built with a design by Art Dyson, architect. Al worked with us to help us make it our own. He was a kind man, interested in us as a young family. We have lived in the house for 51 years. I think of Al every day as I walk in and out the doors, down the hallways and out in the garden .

I have been very blessed to share many wonderful moments with Al and the family. Whenever I would see Al he had a big smile and hug for me, we would chit chat and laugh pretty much about anything. So many memories but some of the favorite were back in the day when Lupe (his wife) was still alive and seeing them both working in the kitchen at their restaurants. I give to the family my respect and love forever!
