Alan Blumenthal Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 31, 2025.
Alan David Blumenthal, 77, of Deerfield, Illinois, passed away peacefully on April 17, 2025. He was born in Chicago on August 7, 1947, and raised in and around West Rogers Park.

A graduate of Sullivan High School, Alan went on to Southern Illinois University and then Northwestern Pritzker School of Law, graduating and joining the bar in 1974. He quickly became an accomplished and sought-after criminal defense attorney-well-known in the halls of both 26th Street and the federal courthouse for his incisive arguments, his unyielding cross-examinations, and his theatrical style.

Alan was a proud father, a beloved grandfather, and a generous friend. His charisma drew people in and his sense of humor livened up any conversation he joined. He read widely and loved to trade wits. He enjoyed hosting get-togethers and idling away a Sunday morning over breakfast at a restaurant with friends. He loved to laugh. He will be missed by many.

Alan is survived by his former wife, Karen; their daughter, Jamie; their son, Jordan (Kaitlyn Quigley); and their grandson, Emmett. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Lilyan, and his two elder sisters, Judy and Donna.

Memorial contributions in Alan's name to the Chicago Bar Foundation's Investing in Justice Campaign [link: chicagobarfoundation.org/donate] would be appreciated.

I will remember our Thursday night get togethers and how you drove me home when the police wouldn´t let me drive even though I was below legal limit.

I was saddened to hear about the passing of my friend Alan, fondly known as Tweety. He was a kind, reliable, and easygoing person who brought a positive spirit to those around him. I appreciated the time we shared and the consistency he brought to our friendship. His presence will be missed, and I´m grateful to have known him. Wishing peace and comfort to all who were fortunate enough to cross paths with him. RIP my dear friend

I will remember Alan´s wit, his sense of humor, his brilliance and his loyalty. We laughed and we cried and we ate lots of food together! We heard live music together and we always talked about politics. He was a one of a kind. He was a character. I just loved him. I miss him everyday. He was my dear friend. May he rest in peace for all eternity. He deserves peace.

Joe Bortz was just saying how he missed Alan's laugh. Joe knew Alan for many years as a friend and as a great attorney. Photo of Alan & Karen from a party at Joe's house circa 1991. Thinking of Alan's family and dear friends at this very sad time. Joe & Debbie
