Albert Jewell Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 20, 2010.
STEUBEN - Albert "Al" Jewell, 86, passed away Sept. 17, 2010, at his home after a long illness. He was born Feb. 23, 1924, in Stony Brook, N.Y., and lived in East Setauket, N.Y., until his retirement in 1983. Al served in the U.S. Coast Guard from 1942 to 1946. In 1945 he married the love of his life, Rose Marie Aiken, and they were together for 55 years until her death in 2001; now he will be with the love of his life again forever. Setauket Volunteer Fire Department was Dad's second home for 40 years, serving a year as chief. In 1983 he retired from International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local Union 25 and moved to Steuben, where we summered for years. Dad loved Maine, especially hunting in the fall. Al was predeceased by his wife, Rose; and two sisters, Dorothy Stirrett and Anita Henrickson, all of Steuben. He is survived by his children, Clarence Jewell and wife, Susan, of Bangor, Marcia Herlihy and husband, John, of Milbridge, Duane Jewell and wife, Beth, of Lamoine and Albert Jewell Jr. and wife, Cheryl, of Newport; five grandchildren, Alison Link and husband, David, William Jewell and fiance, Cindy Nguyen, Alexander Jewell, Colleen Herlihy and Caitlin Jewell; and two great-grandchildren, Hunter and Caroline Link. Thank you Dad, for the wonderful and sometimes not so wonderful memories of our growing up years. Our family thanks Kathy, Yara, Jo-Ann, Laurie, Pam, Helen and Brenda from Hospice Services; we can't say enough about how great they were. Our special thanks to Kathy Johnson of Steuben for all her support before and after Dad's illness. She always brought a smile to his face and laughter to his day; we could never thank you enough. Per Dad's request, there will be no funeral services. A service of Bragdon-Kelley Funeral Home. Condolences may be sent at www.bragdonkelley.com. A Note of Thanks As this journey through my life ends and I begin the next, I would like to leave a few words of appreciation for those I have left behind. I would like to thank all those individuals in the health care profession for the kind and compassionate treatment they gave me. I'm grateful to friends and neighbors who stopped by to visit and share stories, memories and the news. These visits helped fill my days and kept me involved with all the events of life. A thanks to Kathy for the smiles. I'm proud of my boys, Clarence, Duane and Albert Jr. To watch your children grow and become productive, self-sufficient and responsible adults, is every parent's dream. My sons have exceeded those dreams. They have been involved with my life throughout the course of my life and I thank them for the love, joy and pride they have brought me. My final thoughts of gratitude will always be for my daughter, Marcia. We made some difficult choices when I needed full-time care at home. A difficult choice for her to leave home for however long my care would require, and a difficult choice for me knowing the sacrifice she needed to make on my behalf. But for Marcia and me it is, I realize, not about choice or sacrifice or difficulty. It is not about duty or obligation or responsibility. It is about something as pure and selfless as love. I have been unconditionally and wholeheartedly loved. In this I have been truly blessed and I'm forever thankful. Albert Jewell
