Alice McGrath Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Sep. 8 to Sep. 9, 2013.
McGrath, Alice age 89, of Edina, returned to the Lord on September 5, 2013. She was preceded in death by her husband, William J. McGrath, and beloved dogs Lulu, Jessie, Ginger, Malcolm, and Seymour. She is survived by her daughters, Mary Tonkin (Simon), Maureen McGrath (Tom Horak), Brigid McGrath (Jon Najarian), and Regina McGrath (Colleen McGarry); grandchildren, Amelia Tonkin, Alison Tonkin, Sarah Tonkin, Bill Horak, Regina Horak, Tristen Najarian, and Finola Najarian; and grand-puppies, Sassy, Bernadette, Dexter, Sookie, Joe, and Seamus. She received her undergraduate degree from St. John's University in New York and also earned a Masters in Science from the State University of New York. She was a valued educator in the Minneapolis Public Schools for many years and had recently returned to education as an ESL instructor. She instilled her love of education in her four daughters, who all went on to earn advanced degrees, of which Alice was immensely proud. Born in Queens, New York, Alice remained true to her roots in both her attitude and accent. Young at heart, she enjoyed meeting new people and puppies while attending Yappy Hours. She spent her life as an ambassador for all furry creatures. Alice was always ready with a compliment, and friends of all ages and species will miss her generous spirit and joie de vivre. A special thanks to Marge Fleming, friend of the family, for the companionship that she provided on a weekly basis. Another special thanks to Winnifred Marunga, Alice's caregiver in her last years. Alice never dreamed she would meet a best friend at age 87, thank you Winnie. Lastly, a heartfelt thank you to Fairview Hospice Group, especially Nurse Jodi Kriese for making Alice's last days peaceful and comfortable. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, September 13, 2013, at Gill Brothers Funeral Home, 5801 Lyndale Ave S. Visitation one hour prior. Luncheon to follow at Alice's favorite, Sofitel Hotel, 5601 W 78th Street, Bloomington. In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to Best Friends Animal Society (www.bestfriends.org). www.GILLBROTHERS.com MINNEAPOLIS, MN 612 861 6088

Visiting with Aunt Alice and Uncle Bill was a such a treat for us. Even though we didn't see them often, we have fond memories of our dad trading jokes with Uncle Bill all evening long, while we spent time in the kitchen with our mom and Aunt Alice (and Daisy) talking about school, travel, and family. We always laughed a lot! Aunt Alice had wonderful way of making us feel special.

Mary, Regina, Maureen, and dear Bridget with whom I met your mother 30 years ago, in a room at Southdale Hospital. Since then, whether we saw her often or rarely, we remembered her with laughter and love. Now we believe, along with the dog in Higgletty etc, that there is more to life than this...and Alice knows for sure. Fondly, Nancy and Annie Belbas. We will be with you tomorrow for services.

Dear Mary, Maureen, Brigid, and Regina,
Alice was my friend and mentor, especially in my young adult years in Edina. So often she had just the right and comforting words. She loved her faith and education. She encouraged me to finally have my college education--age 43-49; and then my Masters at the School of Divinity, along with seminarians and some latecomers like me.
May God grant you, Alice, the eternal rest and happiness you so richly deserve.

I am so saddened by the news. She was the kindest person I have ever met. Ever since we were kids she was so proud of her family, and she had a right to be. My thoughts and prayers are with you and if you need anything please let me know.

I met Alice last March as a caregiver for Joyful Companions (formerly Touching Hearts at Home). I spent my whole spring break with her working overnight shifts and continued care on weekends and even some Thursday overnights.I would leave her notes in the morning which she looked forward to. She was one of the sweetest people I've met. I got to visit her in July and it was wonderful. I am so thankful for having the chance to meet her and care for her.
