VOLKWEIN ALICE J.
1911-2012. Alice Volkwein, former Mt. Lebanon resident and Jefferson School nurse, died peacefully June 26, 2012 in Juno Beach, FL, at the age of 100. A loving wife of the late Dr. Frederick W. Volkwein; late sister, Dorothy Seif; and late brother, Art Thompson; she is survived by her brother, Fredrick Thompson of New Jersey; and her sons, Richard of Chattanooga, TN, Fred R. of West Palm Beach, FL, Robert of Aiea, HI, Jon of Canonsburg, PA; nine grandchildren; 11 great- grandchildren; one great- great grandchild; and many nieces and nephews. Born Oct. 10, 1911, she bore witness to much of the 20th century and was a strident advocate of women and education, graduating from Carnegie Technical Institute and the West Penn Hospital School of Nursing with B.S. and R.N. degrees. Upon retirement to Juno Beach, she became a member of the 1st UUC of the Palm Beaches and volunteered for numerous committees and service work at her Waterford retirement community. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on July 28, 2012, at the Waterford Auditorium, 607 Universe Blvd., Juno Beach, FL. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in her name may be sent to the 1st UUC of the Palm Beaches or the Hospice of Palm Beach County.

To the family of Mrs Volkwein,

I remember her as my school nurse that I had to visit on several occasions during my years of growing up. She was a very nice lady. Reading this notice, tells me she lived a long and wonderful life with all of you.
