i read the book “Alicia afterimage” and I’m on the last 3 pages, and I would just like to say I am very, very proud of her mother for sharing this story, and Alicia’s beautiful soul this book really connected with me as a grieving teen. Sincerely. Thank You.

I had a dream about you, I went to Blake's football field and there was a memorial all laid out in your honor. It had your artwork, your purse with some of your personal things, and just a bunch of photos inside.

I remember when you told me how you saw me walking in your neighborhood and we should just talk sometime.. I'm saddened that on the Friday of your accident we were going to finish a project together but you told me we'd just do it Monday but to have a good weekend..

I know I didn't know you as well as a handful of people, but you truly will be missed by everyone including me.

Rest In Peace Alicia.. <3

Merry Christmas Alicia! I know you are celebrating with Jesus but all of us down here miss you like crazy..

...Students at Blair and Blake alike mourn Betancourt’s death. According to Blake junior Amanda Kaplan, one of Betancourt’s best friends, she was “one of sweetest, nicest people" she’d ever met. “She loved everybody, and everybody loved her," said Kaplan.

For one reason or another I "discovered" Alicia today, and have spent hours collecting what there is to be known from afar about her sweet life and her father Arturo's resolve to make the world a better place. I want to offer my love and my sorrow for the tremendous loss to her family, her friends, and the planet earth - because it's clear that her presence made it a more beautiful place for all of us.

September 26, 2005

Alicia, it's been a year and two days.. I still can't beleive it's been that long. We miss you because we as people are selfish even though we know that you are in a better place... Miss you tons..

We miss you so much, class of 2006 feels empty this year without you. I hope that you are a dancing angel with pink ballet slippers.

Alicia, I miss you.. I didn't even get to know you but with everyone mentioning how great you are makes me wish I seeked out to you more. You always had a smile, I'm not saying that because everyone else I'm saying it because I sit and observe people. You are with God now and that must be great having his love and support but all your friends still miss you down here.. I'm praying for you..

Alicia, Alicia,...I barely knew you but yet your death had such a tremdenous impact on me, including everyone at Blake.

Personally, I enjoyed seeing your smile every day in 7th period with Mr. Overman.. I remember you mentioned that you, Rachel, and myself were the only girls in a class full of boys and how some how we'd show 'em girls had skills too.

It's been 9 months and two days since you've died and it seems like only yesterday I heard Ms. Goodman mention how something tragic happend over the weekend, although I already heard about prior to that announcement.

You're smile, you're sweetness, you're creativity, you're humor, et cetera.. everything you were will be missed.

Rest In Peace Alicia.

When I first attended Blake, Alicia was one of the first people I met. She always had a nice word to say about everyone, and everyone always had something nice to say about her. Her smile was one of the most brilliant things I have ever seen, even when you felt like you had the worst day of your life, her smile made you feel like everything would be all right. I will always remember you, Alicia. I turn to you everyday for support because I know that you had the strength to deal with whatever is troubling me. I miss you so much, but I know that if I touch the lives of as many people as you did, then I will truly be successfull. You have moved on, but you will never be forgotten, as long as people remember you for your accomplishments and wonderful personality.

While I didn't know Alicia as well in my middle school years, and we just shared knowing smiles in the halls of Blake, I will always remember the times that our families spent together in our childhood. As the Betancourts were neighbors to my good friends, the McAllister's, I can remember meeting Alicia at Kevin's house when we celebrated holidays. Alicia was always fun to play games with because she was so creative and fun. She is loved and missed by all that knew her, and by reading this guest book, she has even touched and blessed those who didn't know her. Rest in peace, Alicia.

Almost half a year, and we miss you so badly still- love you Alicia, I'll always remember you. I look to you everyday to see the person that I want to become, thank you for showing me the beauty in life and for being with us while you could; you're with me every step of every day, and you will be for the rest of my life. Thank you for all that you've given me, and for being a great friend.

Love you-

Alicia was one of the closest camp roomates I've ever had, this summer at MICA. The four weeks we spent together along with our third musketeer, Marti, were amazing. Alicia was the nicest, sweetest girl with spunk and tremendous creativity. She was always there to make us laugh or comfort us. I will, and already do, miss her so much. My sincerest wishes and condolences to her family.

There are no words to express the love I have always felt and will always feel for Alicia Maria. She is the most beautiful person I have ever met. I know that even though she is no longer with us in body, her spirit will always be inside of each and every one of us. Since she left us, I have seen daisies and ladybugs in the most out of character places, and I know that she is watching over me, that she will always be watching over me and all of the people who shared her life with her. My love and thoughts and prayers go to her family, who I am always here for when they need me. I love you Alicia. I will always love you. Your place in my heart is everlasting.

I went to Eastern Middle School with Alicia in 6th grade. We became instant friends and I have so many memories of the great times we shared. She was one of the sweetest, most genuine people I have ever met. The world would be a much better place if there were more people like Alicia.

Thank you for sharing your "Alicia" memories, for your kind thoughts, and good wishes. Alicia was indeed a special girl who lived each day to the fullest.

Entirely happy with what she had, she was kind, joyful, talented, bright, but most of all an honest and true friend.

Since she is no longer able to go to college, something she was already looking forward to, we have established a fund in her memory that will enable other deserving students to pursue higher education.

Dear Betancourt family,

This afternoon I learned about your dear loss and wanted to get in touch. I am Alicia's summer teacher from Maryland Institute College of Art. On behalf of the College I want to extend our deepest condolences. This Summer Alicia raised the bar in the class because she was very talented, a true natural. Her drawings and architectural models were exquisite. She was always happy, willing to help others, caring and sweet. She was a working bee, very dedicated and passionate about her work! She will be missed greatly.

Un abrazo, Yanel de Angel

Although I didn't know Alicia, I send out my heart to those who have known her. This was a horrible tragedy that no one should have experienced especially at the age of 16. I attended blake and had heard about her but never knew her. I send my love and support to her friends and family! If there is a fund for her in which people can help please let us know! Alicia you will not be missed by all that have known you!

Celebrate Alicia's life! She is in a better place now looking down over all of us. Alicia touched my life in many ways. In fact looking back on it I feel it's appropriate to say that she was and still is our guardian angel. There will never be another person quite as special as Alicia, and to all those who knew her, we are better off because of it. "Wear her smile every day, to touch your heart in a special way":) We love you Alicia! You will never be forgotten!

To the Betancourt Family,

I grew up with Veronica Betancourt. Some of my sweetest memories as a child are of coming to your beautiful home and spending time with your wonderful family. I will never forget your kindness to me. I am so sorry for your loss. Your family is amazing, and every one of you has greatly impacted so many lives. My family's thoughts and prayers are with you.

I will always remember when I first met Alicia. She gave me a huge hug and introduced herself. At that moment I knew she was going to be one of my good friends. In 9th grade we were very close. I remember one day at a friends house, I was so sick that I was laying in the hallway with a pile of tissues all around me. Alicia was my nurse and took care of me! She is so beautiful and such a kind person. Notice I used the present tence instead of the past, because I know that Alicia still lives on, and always will, in my heart. I love you girl!

October 4, 2004

I have known Alicia since first grade, when we were best friends, I will never forget the first time she came over to my house and was terrified of my dog, she ran around the yard screaming. Even then she was tiny, beautiful, funny, and a talented girl. I will never forget Alicia and from this day forward whenever I see a ladybug (Alicia loved ladybugs, she had ladybug everything!)or daisy my heart will be filled of the wonderful memories we shared. I wouldnt give back the moments and the time with her for the world. Everything Alicia has taught me will be with me for the rest of my life. I love you Alicia, rest in peace.

I am so grateful that you shared Alicia with all of us. She had this inner-beauty that came from her soul and was truly authentic. I remember how hard it could be for her to talk about herself when there was something bothering someone else. I will miss her and love her forever, but I know that right now she’s looking down upon us from heaven with that big bright smile and so I will try to smile back.

Love Always,

Alicia Maria Betancourt- a name so melodic, so elegant, so refined and beautiful- how could you be any different than you were! In our hearts you will always be the tiny Tiffany box, that when opened, is always a treasure forever. We will love you always for the joy that you were and for the joy you brought to Amanda's life. Her locker, her life, and her heart will always have a hole that you filled. She will love you forever and we will always cherish the memories.

With our love,

To the Betancourt family,

Please accept my deepest sympathies. Although I didn't know your daughter personally; my son, Christopher, has told me how much she brightened his life. I am truly grateful that he had the opportunity to have known such a beautiful person in his lifetime. Wonderful memories of Alicia will be with us always.

My most sincere condolences..

I unfortunately never got the chance to spend much time with Alicia, but as one of the 100 students of the Eastern Humanities Program in her year, I of course knew exactly who Alicia was: bright, caring, and always smiling. I specifically remember the first day I came into school with braces on- Alicia was of course the first to notice and compliment them. She was always perceptive that way, and knew just how to make everyone around her feel at ease. My heart goes out to all those who have been struck so hard by her passing.

September 29, 2004

To the Betancourt family, Alicia was a beautiful person, not only on the outside, but more so from the inside. She was such a happy girl, who at Eastern made friends with everyone and anyone. She accepted you for who you were and more importantly, made you feel good about yourself. Alicia was my good friend and although I didn't go to her house or visit often enough, she made such an impression. Her smile could make me laugh for no reason except that her happiness was contagious. Whoever got to know her knew about her happiness and genuine love towards all of her friends. She inspired so many people and touched all of our lives. We will miss her so much, but I know she is watching us and making sure we all cherish our memories.

I will truly miss Alicia. She was one of the few people I have met that were genuinely kind hearted and friendly. I was lucky to have spent a month with such an intersting, fun, TALANTED peer at Interlochen Arts Camp, summer of 2001.

I was in the Humanities Program with Alicia at Eastern Middle School. I regret that I only ever had one class with her, a science class in eighth grade. Alicia always was considerate of others and accepted everyone as they were. She was an unparalleled artist and the one of the most inspiring people I have ever met. Fly with grace, Alicia, you are loved.

I haven't gone to school with Alicia in a while, but I'll always remember her as the talented one. I had art class with her, and just watching her work was amazing. Not only was she talented, but she had a kind heart. Her loss is so tragic, and I want to send my support to her family.

Alicia was in my very first class that I ever taught at Stonegate elementary in first grade. I will never ever forget her beautiful artwork, clever stories and shy smile. She was a brilliant person and a beautiful person inside and out. It was always so exciting when she shared her stories and illustrations with the children and me. She was so gifted, warm, friendly and compassionate to others. I am so very sorry for your loss and am thinking of you - Alicia and her family are in my prayers.

Alicia Betancourt was one of the best people I knew. We met in 9th grade and were close friends ever since. Although we did not hang out much outside of school, we always shared stories about everything. She always knew how to brighten everyone's day with her beautiful smile and I never heard her say a mean thing about anyone without a reason. Alicia was a very special person and I will miss her.

I met alicia through my best friend amanda who goes to blake high school. Alicia was a very sweet girl and I got to know her well enough to know that she could just light up a room. She always had a smile on her face and had so much happiness in her. I have never met a girl like her, she was very special in her own way. I am truly sorry to all of her friends at school that lost her and her family. You will never be forgotten alicia.

Dear Alicia,

I love how you taught me how to wear headbands and showed up at my door when we wanted to do gymnastics. I loved when you taught me new dance moves or when you showed me a new cereal. I will never forget the times we had as best friends and neighbors, or even just little girls having fun. I love you and I miss you! xoxo, Maggie

Alicia was as close to perfect a person can get. She was nice to whoever came by her path. I saw her everyday during school, lunch, etc. I was good friends with her by sophmore year. But I'm a shy person and didn't know what to say to her all the time. Now that she's off to a better place the only thing that I can say is that I love her and there is always the treasured memories.

Although I had only spoken with Alicia a few times, I know she was sweet girl and had a kind heart. Her brilliant smile and lively attitude made her stand out at Blake. Alicia...wow. Alicia was one of the nicest, most caring, most wonderful people I've ever met. I didn't know her as well as I would have liked, but I could feel the radiance that emanated from her every time I was around her. Alicia was so beautiful that she made everything around her beautiful, with her art and with her immense and genuine devotion to other people. She never judged, and she always made sure to say hello and to ask how you were doing if you looked unhappy. The world lost an amazing cherub this weekend, and I just hope that people everywhere can learn something from this. To Alicia's parents: Thank you for raising such a wonderful child who left an impression on everyone she met. It was a pleasure knowing her, and I wish there was something more I could do to express my sympathy and sorrow for your loss.

Alicia was in several of my classes all throughout middle and high school. I never knew her that well but when I think of her I think of brightness, happiness, and potential. She seemed a classic example of someone who would succeed with flying colors at everything she did. She brought good things into the lives of everyone she knew (and she knew alot of people), and she will continue to bring good things into all the lives she touched.

Alicia was the nicest and most amazing person I have ever met. She was always smiling and she made everyone around her happy. I will never forget the times at Stonegate Elementary with the butterflys. She was incredibly artsitic and talented. She will be missed by everyone she knew and we will never forget her. She looks upon us now as an angel, which she always was. I miss her and I will never forget.

I'll be honest, I did not know Alicia as well as others. But you didn't need to know her to know her. She was the type of person that if you only met once, she would make you feel like you were worth something to this world. It is a tradegy that the rest of the world won't get to see that but i am grateful that i did. She is in a better place now and does not have to go through any pain in her life. I went to Eastern Middle School with Alicia in the Humanities Program, one of the tightly knit group of 100. I got to know her since the first few days of 6th grade. I had the pleasure of sharing classes, field trips, and even working on a few projects with her. Never will I forget her kindness and her talents, her carisma and her great personality. She was smart, beautiful, artistic, expressive...she can simply be described as Alicia. To the Betancourts, thank you for Alicia. I can personally attest that the entire Eastern family shares this with you. The Lord be with you. May He bless you and keep you.

Alicia and I became friends almost immediately at the start of high school..we both were of the few that had come from the magnet programs (eastern/takoma). Over the past 2 years, we ate lunch at the same table almost every single day, and it's going to seem vacant without her. She may be gone from that lunch table, from that spot where we all stood every morning, but she will always have a spot in my heart.

This is my farewell.

We truly have lost a really wonderful person! How tragic that Alicia's life was cut short. I taught Alicia reading and writing in the first grade in a special pull out group of gifted children. She was so bright and so delightful! I'm sure everyone will miss her greatly. My thoughts and prayers are with her family.
