Alla Mae McWhorter Obituary

Throckmorton - Alla Mae McWhorter, 99, passed away Wednesday, April 30, 2025. A funeral service will be held at 2:00pm, Monday, May 5, 2025, at the Christian Center in Throckmorton, Texas with Rev. Jimmy Rogers officiating. Burial will follow the service at the Throckmorton Cemetery under the direction of Smith Family Funeral Homes, Throckmorton. A visitation is planned from 2:00 to 3:00pm at the funeral home, Sunday, May 4, 2025, 107 N Austin, Throckmorton, Texas.

Alla Mae McWhorter, most knew her as "Pig", a few knew her as "Ma", but the core group of us simply knew her as Grandmother. She was born on October 13, 1925 as Alla Mae Holmes to Arch and Della Holmes of Seymour, TX.

She came from a large, close family of five sisters and two brothers. She talked to her siblings daily and missed them more and more as she eventually became the last of her generation. She was extremely proud of her daddy and always took time to tell everyone about his legendary tales. She was married at the early age of 16 to Glenn McWhorter on July 30, 1942. For 71 years they endured everything life could throw at them, and they triumph over it in storybook fashion. Granddad went off to war, leaving her at home to handle everyday life but also the constant worry of his safety. After he came home, their lives were put back in full motion and their family continued to grow. Jack, Bob, and Royce soon filled her world and her workload. Granddad was busy training, horses and ranching. She would spend weeks and months caring for her family while he was going from show to show all over the country. In these times of feast or famine, Grandmother found her true calling. She was the most amazing mother and grandmother to her family. She could be the most stern lady, and her authority was never questioned. But in that same moment, her love would completely surround you. The most visual expression of how much she meant to us was the length of time we would spend standing at the back door. We never wanted to leave their presence in that place of love and safety. Grandmother loved sharing a cup of coffee or playing a game of cards. She loved cooking for her family and was the absolute best without question. Grandmother loved her church family, and I could see the joy that came into her life when her and granddad spent time with Jesus at the Christian Center.

The walk to Emmaus changed them and their family's lives forever. From the endless four wheeler trips around the house, to homemade popsicles, to fried quail and chicken, our childhoods were more than perfect. We owe that all to Grandmother and her nurturing love for all of us. For those of us that were there, I hope we carry some of that heritage of Grandmother's to our own families. She is survived by 2 sons, 8 grandchildren, and 9 great grandchildren.

The Munday Nursing Center was absolutely wonderful to her and she became friends with all the staff, residents, and the dedicated daily visitors. We as a family will always be thankful for each of your friendships. Any memorials can be sent to the MNC or TVFD.

The names of Pig and Glen McWhorter have remained in my heart even though I have not returned to Throckmorton for many years. What an awesome lady and a great friend to my parents, Bill and Peggy Redwine. As well as to my grandparents, Homer and Zelma Redwine. I always enjoyed conversations with Pig because she was straight forward in her approach to life. She could make me laugh harder than anyone with her stories of the past. Especially tales of Glen and my Dad. I pray your memories will comfort you in the emptiness of Pig's return home, but also take comfort that she and Glen are reunited. We are so blessed to have known her. A great lady.

Hugs and prayers for all of you. I have fond memories of visiting Glen and Pig, and eating her famous PIG pie. I use her recipe but never turn out as good as I remember Pig’s.

Pig was one of the sweetest, most generous, hospitable ladies I have ever known. She was fun to be with, a strong person (She had a husband & 3 sons), and a very faithful Christian. I will hold her in my heart and miss her always.
Prayers for the Lord to comfort her family and friends. I love you, Pig.

I don’t know if I can say enough good things about Pig. We got to know them through the cutting horses and became instant friends. What her family said about her cooking was the best especially her pig pies and pickles. We used to visit her and Glen. At their ranch and had a blast swimming in the tank and riding 4 wheelers and just resting on the back screened in porch. My love and prayers for you boys and all of the family.
Love y’all, Judy Cox

Jack and Royce, so sad to read of Pig passing, we had to call you all when Shirley and I weren't going to ride the bus, Glen would answer "mule barn"! before the bus came from Elbert we rode in the school car, Eddie and Jack love to aggravate us, one morning there was a coke bottle in floorboard, Shirley picked it up and hit Eddie over the head, they kind of quit bothering us after that morning. Lots memories.
